Winter Sports Action Kicks Off in Arlington

Arlington is buzzing as high school sports get into full swing this week! The winter season is officially here, following the completion of fall sports, and there’s a packed schedule ahead for local athletes. From basketball games to wrestling tournaments, swim meets, gymnastics, and ice hockey matches, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

The action begins on Friday, December 6, with several boys basketball matches on the calendar. Notable games include Dunbar at Bishop O’Connell at 7:30 p.m. and Olympic at Wakefield, also starting at 7:30 p.m. Meanwhile, in the girls basketball segment, Olympic will take on Wakefield at 5:45 p.m. and Dunbar faces Bishop O’Connell at the same time.

In swim and dive, Bishop O’Connell will participate in a meet at Gallaudet University, kicking off a series of events. Other meets include Wakefield against Marshall at Audrey Moore RECenter and Langley traveling to face Washington-Liberty, both starting at 6 p.m.

Track and field athletes will be shining as well, with Wakefield competing at the Thomas Jefferson Community Center multi-team meet at 5:30 p.m., while Dunbar goes for their matches at Bishop O’Connell at 5:45 p.m.

For wrestling enthusiasts, there’s a big opportunity as Wakefield, Washington-Liberty, and Yorktown will be at the Fairfax Invitational, scheduled for 2 p.m.

Ice hockey fans can catch the excitement as boys teams face off, like Stone Bridge at Yorktown at 6 p.m., and Washington-Liberty at Bishop O’Connell at 8 p.m., both at MedStar Capitals Iceplex. The girls ice hockey team at Bishop O’Connell will compete against Georgetown Visitation at 3:50 p.m. that same day.

Every day holds new events and surprises as the week progresses, with various games and meets happening almost every hour. The community is encouraged to come out and support their teams as they kick off what promises to be an exciting winter sports season!
