In the charming city of Irmo, South Carolina, excitement is in the air as a local talent climbs the ranks in Hollywood! Will Loftis, a familiar name to those who’ve hit the dance floors at the Southern Strutt studio, is now making waves as an assistant choreographer for the enchanting film adaptation of “Wicked.” This hotly anticipated movie, a prequel to the beloved “Wizard of Oz,” premiered on November 22, 2024, and it’s already breaking box office records during the Thanksgiving week!
Growing up in Irmo, Loftis soaked up every bit of dance instruction he could find at Southern Strutt, led by the talented Leah Evans. “I always knew he had a special gift since he was young,” Evans shared, bursting with pride. “His success is so deserving!”
As Loftis stepped into the role of assistant choreographer, under the guidance of renowned choreographer Christopher Scott, he had the impressive task of teaching the mesmerizing choreography that audiences are raving about. Loftis has been sharing glimpses of his incredible experience on Instagram with his impressive 54,000 followers. From rehearsal snippets to fun behind-the-scenes shots, it’s clear that he is living his dream!
It’s not just the dance number that’s catching everyone’s eye. Loftis had the incredible opportunity to work with pop sensation Ariana Grande, one of the film’s leading ladies, along with powerhouse Cynthia Erivo. The stars didn’t just share the screen; they collaborated on a music video for Grande’s new single “yes, and?”, which Loftis also choreographed. Talk about a glam squad!
Loftis expressed his joy about the project, saying, “In a lot of ways, I felt like it was a love letter to jazz and a love letter to every dance teacher I’ve ever had in my life.” His infectious enthusiasm is just what you want to see from someone in the spotlight!
Will Loftis’s career didn’t just start with “Wicked.” He’s been in the game for a while now! At just 19, he began his professional journey working on the romantic comedy “No Strings Attached” and has since choreographed for hit shows like “Glee” and “So You Think You Can Dance?” Not to mention, he served as a backup dancer for Taylor Swift! What a resume!
Despite his soaring fame, Loftis stays connected to his roots. Evans fondly noted that Loftis returns home to teach classes and share his expertise with the next generation of dancers at Southern Strutt. “The younger dancers are just in awe, and think it’s the coolest thing ever!” she exclaimed.
As “Wicked” soared on its opening weekend, a group of approximately 30 family, friends, and mentors gathered to watch the film. The night was filled with tears, laughter, and applause as they cheered Loftis on during his big screen debut. “We all cried, sang along, clapped and screamed when we saw Will on the big screen,” exclaimed Evans. “This is now my all-time favorite movie!”
Looking ahead, Loftis is not slowing down anytime soon! A second part of “Wicked” is set to premiere in 2025, and fans can only imagine the magical moments awaiting us. Not to mention, Loftis is expected to continue his rock-star status throughout the dance and film industry.
In a world where dreams can seem distant, Loftis’s journey is a spectacular reminder that with hard work, passion, and a little bit of Irmo magic, anything is possible. Irmo is beaming with pride, and we can’t wait to see what’s next for this local legend!
