NEWBERRY, S.C. — The South Carolina Severe Weather and Flood Safety Week is set to take place March 3-9, 2024. This event is jointly sponsored by the National Weather Service and South Carolina Emergency Management Division, with an aim to enhance awareness and preparedness for severe weather and flood hazards in the state.

Throughout the week, public information about the hazards and preparedness techniques will be disseminated through social media platforms and the official web page. The thematic distribution of information for each day of the week would be as follows:

  • Sunday: Types of Severe Weather
  • Monday: Weather Watches and Warnings
  • Tuesday: Strategic Advice on Staying Connected
  • Wednesday: Tornado Safety Protocols and Drills
  • Thursday: An Emphasis on Flooding: Stats, Risks, and Dangers
  • Friday: The “Turn around, don’t drown” mantra and Home Safety Tips During Flooding
  • Saturday: Post-Storm Recovery and Assistance Information

A key highlight of the week will be the annual statewide tornado drill scheduled for Wednesday, March 6, 2023, at 9 a.m. This drill will encompass the entire state of South Carolina and will utilize the Routine Weekly Test code “RWT” to activate NOAA All-Hazards Weather Radios.

Public schools, businesses, and other organizations are encouraged to participate in the tornado drill as an opportunity to practice and refine their severe weather and tornado safety protocols and procedures.

The overarching goal of South Carolina Severe Weather and Flood Safety Week is to empower residents with the knowledge and resources needed to effectively prepare for, respond to, and recover from severe weather events and flooding incidents. Through proactive education and community engagement, the state aims to build resilience and reduce the risks associated with natural disasters.
