Lexington, S.C. witnessed an unexpected turn of events on Monday night as a routine response to a civil dispute escalated into a dramatic chase involving a patrol car. The scene unfolded in the 3400 block of Augusta Road, where a local deputy was summoned to a reported disturbance.
Upon arrival, the deputy encountered Kevin Romero, a 22-year-old man who was not only involved in the dispute but was also wanted by multiple law enforcement agencies in the Midlands area. Things quickly escalated as Romero, wielding a bat, refused to cooperate. Sheriff Jay Koon reported that Romero eventually put down the bat but then made a startling claim that he had a knife in his pocket.
The deputy, acting swiftly, retrieved the knife and placed it on the ground, signaling a potential de-escalation of the situation. However, the tension didn’t ease; a struggle ensued between the deputy and Romero, leading to a chaotic scene where backup was called for assistance.
During the struggle, the situation turned physical. In a bid to regain control, the deputy struck Romero in the face when the young man grabbed his wrist. That wasn’t the end of it—before the deputy could use his taser, Romero made a bold move. He opened the driver’s side door of the deputy’s patrol car, hopped in, and drove off!
Leaving the scene in the patrol vehicle, Romero’s reckless driving ignited a chase that involved law enforcement in the area. The deputy, quick on his feet, managed to hop into a passerby’s car to continue the pursuit, joining forces with a second deputy shortly after. This wild chase lasted only a few minutes but had everyone on the edge of their seats.
The high-speed chase came to an abrupt halt when Romero crashed the patrol car on I-20 near mile marker 5 in Aiken County. The deputies wasted no time in apprehending him. Sheriff Koon later revealed that all the deputy’s gear was still intact inside the vehicle when they inspected it. Interestingly, it was reported that Romero attempted to use the patrol car’s mobile computing terminal (MCT) to navigate to **Miami**, and even performed a factory reset on the deputy’s county-issued phone during the chase.
After he was safely detained, Romero was transported to the Lexington County Detention Center. He now faces several serious charges, including grand larceny, failure to stop for blue lights, and reckless driving. Sheriff Koon indicated that more charges could be forthcoming as the investigation continues.
This extraordinary series of events has brought attention to the challenges law enforcement faces in the field and highlights the rapid escalation of confrontations with suspects. As the community processes this wild chase and the implications it carries, many are left hoping for more peaceful resolutions to such disputes in the future.
Lexington residents can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that authorities responded quickly to a potentially dangerous situation, ensuring that those involved were taken into custody without further incident.
