Residents of West Columbia are invited to participate in the WaterSC listening session on January 7th at Phillips Market Center. The event includes an open house and a public comment session, providing an opportunity for community input on water management in South Carolina. This initiative aims to balance economic activities with environmental needs, addressing significant concerns about water resources in the region.
Hey there, West Columbia! Mark your calendars because there’s an important event happening on January 7th that every resident should pay attention to. The WaterSC listening session is set to take place at the Phillips Market Center, located at 117 Ballard Court. Whether you’re a passionate advocate for water conservation or just curious about local water issues, this is your chance to get involved!
The fun starts with an open house at 4 p.m., where attendees can drop by and learn more about what WaterSC is all about. Then, at 6 p.m., there will be a public comment session. This is where folks can speak up and share their thoughts on how South Carolina should be managing its precious water resources. It’s not just a boring meeting – it’s a chance for you to voice your opinions and make a real difference!
Water resource management can feel like a complicated web of decisions, regulations, and interests. To tackle these challenges, Governor Henry McMaster issued an executive order last year to create WaterSC. This initiative aims to bring together different groups and individuals to find a balance between necessary economic activities like agriculture and manufacturing, while also caring for our environment. Smart water management is crucial for South Carolina, especially as we consider the impacts of mega-farms and housing developments.
The Water Resources Working Group, which was formed a while back on September 24, 2024, is hard at work crafting a comprehensive state water plan. This plan is focused on striking that delicate balance between economic needs and environmental concerns—something that affects everyone in the community!
Your input can guide these discussions. Myra Reece, the Interim Director of the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services (SCDES), is really looking forward to hearing from the public. If you can’t make it to the session in person, no worries! You can still participate by sending your thoughts via email to WaterSC@des.sc.gov or filling out an online form. Your views matter, and they can help shape the future of water management in our state!
This upcoming WaterSC listening session is an exciting opportunity for everyone in West Columbia to take part in an important conversation about our water resources. Let’s make sure our voices are heard—together we can help shape a sustainable and thriving future for South Carolina!
