Vermont High School Sports Kick Off 2024 Fall Season with Thrilling Matches and Dominating Performances

The fall sports season in Vermont has kicked off with an exciting array of matches this past week, showcasing the talent of high school athletes across the state. Various sports, including soccer, field hockey, volleyball, and more, saw some impressive performances.

Soccer Highlights

In a dominant display, Rice defeated Essex with a score of 4-0. Violet Clough and Kate Larkin each netted two goals, while Maryann Nunn assisted on three goals. Notably, all of Rice’s goals came from penalty corners, marking a successful opening on their new turf.

South Burlington also shined, blowing out Middlebury with an 8-0 victory. Following a strong team effort, Oli Roy led the scoring with two goals, supported by teammates Grace Landerman, Sawyer Bailey, and others who each contributed to the scoreline. Amber Rousseau was solid in goal, making three saves.

Champlain Valley had a strong showing against Mount Abraham, winning 7-0. Players Penny Webster and Alex Wemple scored twice each in the team’s impressive performance.

Field Hockey Roundup

Fair Haven took control in their match against Woodstock, winning 5-0. Leigha Kretzer stood out with three goals and two assists, while Maddy Perry added a pair of goals. Kretzer’s hat trick was noteworthy, as she accomplished it in the first half.

In another close encounter, North Country edged out Hazen 2-1, thanks to Alex Giroux’s two goals.

Volleyball Action

On the volleyball front, Essex defeated Burlington 3-0, with standout performances from Hannah Knickerbocker, who recorded significant kills and digs. Colchester also clinched a 3-0 victory over Montpelier, showcasing a balanced team effort.

As the fall season continues, teams are encouraged to report their scores and updates promptly to allow for complete coverage of this dynamic sports season.

Looking ahead, numerous matches are scheduled, including a clash between Champlain Valley and Burlington at 4 p.m., which promises to be another exciting showdown.
