Vermont High School Sports Update: Fall Season in Full Swing

This week in Vermont, the 2024 high school fall sports season has kicked off with plenty of exciting matches across various categories including soccer, field hockey, volleyball, golf, and cross-country running. Coaches are urged to report scores ASAP after games by emailing sports@burlingtonfreepress.com.

In soccer, Champlain Valley had a dominant performance against Middlebury, winning 10-1. Emery Thompson led the way with 2 goals and 2 assists, while Penny Webster also found the net twice. U-32 secured a strong victory over Lyndon, shutting them out 6-0. Addie Gold scored twice, and Hannah Drury added 2 goals of her own.

In a closely contested match, Milton defeated Mount Abraham 1-0 in overtime, thanks to a goal from Holley MacLellan just under three minutes into the extra period. Meanwhile, Essex celebrated a 4-0 victory over BFA-St. Albans, with Grace Symula netting 2 goals.

The cross-country results showcased impressive performances with Harwood achieving a 6-0 shutout against Lake Region. Briley Rutledge stood out with 3 goals for Harwood.

In volleyball, Montpelier had an impressive outing against Missisquoi, winning 3-0 in sets with standout performances from Abby Hess and Veda Gahagan, who contributed significantly with aces. Harwood also triumphed over Middlebury, winning 3-1, led by Savannah Fulton’s 11 kills.

In another tight game, South Burlington edged out Mount Mansfield 4-3 in overtime, with Evie Keblin scoring the thrilling winner just before the final whistle. Every match has gathered excitement as the teams vied for important early-season victories.
