USC Freezes In-State Tuition for 5th Consecutive Year

Columbia, South Carolina – June 28, 2024

The University of South Carolina (USC) has announced that it will freeze tuition for in-state students for the fifth consecutive year, while increasing tuition for out-of-state students. The decision was made as part of the university’s new annual budget approved by the USC Board of Trustees on June 23.

Tuition Freeze for In-State Students

For the 2024-2025 school year, USC will keep tuition flat for in-state students. This move aims to make higher education more accessible and affordable for South Carolina residents. According to USC Board Chairman Thad Westbrook, the decision reflects the university’s commitment to serving the entire state.

Rise in Tuition for Out-of-State Students

On the other hand, out-of-state students will see a 3% increase in tuition for the upcoming academic year. The per-semester tuition rate for in-state students at USC’s Columbia campus will remain at $6,344, while out-of-state student tuition will rise to $17,467.

Investments and Initiatives

Alongside the tuition freeze, USC also announced several investments to enhance the student experience and academic programs. These include allocating $4.5 million to the student internship program, $30 million to establish a Brain Health Center at the upcoming Health Science Campus, $29 million for renovation and construction at the Science and Technology area of the Columbia campus, and $4.45 million for teacher recruitment and retention.

Similar Decision by Clemson University

In a similar move, Clemson University decided to freeze in-state tuition at $7,019 per semester and raise out-of-state tuition by 3.5% to around $19,656. The decision aims to balance affordability for in-state students while generating revenue from out-of-state attendees.

Overall, these tuition adjustments and investments highlight USC’s commitment to providing quality education and fostering academic growth while maintaining financial sustainability.
