Tragic Evening on US 178: One Dead After Multiple Vehicle Strikes

LEXINGTON COUNTY, S.C. — A peaceful evening turned fatal on Thursday as a pedestrian lost their life following a series of unfortunate events on a busy road. The South Carolina Highway Patrol reported that the tragic incidents took place around 7:17 p.m. along US 178, near the intersection with Washboard Road, which is located just three miles north of Pelion.

What Happened?

According to the troopers’ initial investigation, it all began with an unknown vehicle traveling west on US 178. This vehicle struck a pedestrian who was in the roadway. Sadly, instead of stopping to check on the situation, this driver fled the scene, leaving the pedestrian injured.

Things took a turn for the worse just moments later. An eastbound vehicle—also unknown—then struck the same pedestrian, even as they lay on the road. In yet another heart-wrenching twist, a 2009 Chevrolet sedan driving in the same direction struck the pedestrian for a third time. It was at this point that officials later confirmed the pedestrian had succumbed to their injuries at the scene. What a terrible, sorrowful outcome!

Ongoing Investigation

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is currently working diligently to piece together the details of what transpired. Investigators are reaching out to the public for help in gathering any information regarding the vehicles involved. If you saw anything unusual or have any details, they want to hear from you!

This incident serves as a stark reminder of how quickly things can change on the roads. One moment, everything seems fine, and the next, lives are forever altered. The troopers and local community members are left to grapple with the aftermath of such a tragic event.

Community Response

The local community is understandably shaken by this news. With Pelion being such a close-knit area, the loss of any life deeply affects everyone. Friends, family, and neighbors will undoubtedly come together to support one another in the following days as they process this tragedy.

Authorities remind everyone to prioritize safety while out on the roads—both for drivers and pedestrians. It’s crucial to stay alert, especially in areas where visibility may be low or where pedestrians are present. This heart-breaking incident could have been avoided with a bit more vigilance from drivers.

Remembering the Victim

While details about the pedestrian’s identity have not yet been released, it’s important to acknowledge that this individual was someone’s loved one—a friend, a parent, or a partner. As the community continues to rally together, it’s essential to honor their memory and reflect on the importance of safety and compassion for one another during these trying times.

A Call for Action

As we gain more insight into this tragic situation, it serves as a clear call for action—from both officials and residents. Troopers are hoping for any leads that can assist in identifying the unknown vehicles involved. It is critical for everyone on the road to take steps to avoid similar tragedies in the future.

As this investigation unfolds, we’ll be here to bring updates and, most importantly, remind everyone to drive safely, look out for pedestrians, and care for each other out there on the road.
