In Chapin, S.C. the Lexington-Richland 5 school district is turning the tide in the face of teacher shortages by offering resources for individuals keen on starting a career in teaching. Thursday saw a gathering of these prospective teachers at the Center for Advanced Technical Studies in Chapin, eagerly exploring avenues to becoming state-certified educators.
“As you know, there’s a shortage of teachers in South Carolina, so it’s important that we beef up that teacher pool and try to get more students interested in what teaching can offer you,” explained Dr. Kim Neal, an Assistant Professor at Newberry College.
According to the Center for Recruitment, Retention and Advancement (CERRA), South Carolina districts reported an alarming 1,613 vacancies at the onset of the 2023-24 academic year. With this in mind, the interest shown by the attendees at Thursday’s event provides a glimmer of hope for the state’s struggling educational sector.
One of the key aspects of the event was the presence of local college representatives ready to shed light on how these prospective teachers could indeed attain their dreams of changing young lives. “It must be remembered that understanding the path to teaching isn’t always straightforward, particularly for individuals outside the teaching sector. This event provided an unparalleled chance to sit down and navigate the sometimes complex road to certification,” said the district’s Director of Human Resources Dr. Reggie Wicker.
Faced with multiple paths to teacher certification, Kierra Walker, a hopeful participant, liked what she saw. “There’s so many different ways to get where you need to be. Going the traditional way, earning a Master’s degree, or even seeking online paths when finances are a concern.” she said, highlighting the variety of options to commence a rewarding career in teaching.
Glowing with optimism, Dr. Neal concluded, “Teaching is a wonderful career that changes lives. Stick with it, the future of children is in your hands.”
