Tartan Day South Brings Celtic Celebration to the Midlands

Tartan Day South Brings Celtic Celebration to the Midlands

Residents and visitors in the Midlands region of South Carolina are cordially invited to embrace their inner Celt from April 4th to 7th at the return of Tartan Day South. This exciting annual event honors the rich Celtic culture and heritage with a medley of activities aiming to enlighten and entertain. Events will be held across Cayce, West Columbia, and Lexington. In addition to being a cultural showcase, Tartan Day South also serves as a fundraiser for the nonprofit River Alliance, which works to connect the community with the area’s beautiful waterways and ensures their continued protection.

Getting the Party Started

On Thursday, April 4 the festivities kick off at Steel Hands Brewing in Cayce for the Tartan Day South Launch Party. Start time for the free event is 7:00 PM, offering a lively start to the weekend’s proceedings.

Music and Merriment

Friday evening will feature a Celtic Concert at Lexington’s Icehouse Amphitheater where Eireann’s Call, Tuatha Dea, and SYR are set to perform. Attendees are encouraged to bring a blanket or stadium cushion for seating, sit back, and enjoy the Celtic melodies. Entry will be free but coolers are not permitted.

A Day of Traditional Pleasures

As dawn breaks on Saturday, April 6, the Tartan Day South Highland Games & Celtic Festival will light up the Historic Columbia Speedway starting from 8:30 AM. The day’s activities will span traditional Highland athletics, dancing, music, and even sheepdog herding exhibitions. A wide range of food and drink vendors, a classic British car show, family rides, and a wealth of other delights await festivalgoers. That evening, Tuatha Dea will lead an open drumming experience at the Historic Columbia Speedway Campground starting at around 7:00 PM.

Wrapping Up with Kirkin’ of the Tartans

The celebrations hit their crescendo on Sunday, April 7 at the Kirkin’ of the Tartans ceremony. Held at the West Columbia Riverwalk Amphitheater from 11 AM, this tradition involves a processional parade of tartans, prayer, and the soul-stirring sound of bagpipes. Participants and spectators alike are invited to appreciate the historical Highlander expressions of patriotism, faith, and independence. As Tartan Day South concludes, expect to leave with a memorable impression of the vibrancy of Celtic culture along with a newfound knowledge of the pride seeped in its traditions.

Whether you’re of Celtic descent or simply have a love for learning about different cultures, Tartan Day South promises to be a memorable celebration of heritage and camaraderie in the Midlands. Be part of this beautiful celebration and join in as the community comes together to toast its shared Celtic lineage whilst supporting the wonderful work done by the River Alliance.
