Flashback to January 16, 2022, when a winter storm made Brushy Creek Road in Anderson County a slippery challenge. Upstate regions found themselves under up to 4 inches of snow and ice, causing travel woes for many. This recent dusting is quite a contrast to the epic snowfalls recorded back in the day.
One notable event painted the landscape white between February 8 and 9 in 1973, when a massive storm blanketed Aiken County with between 15 to 18 inches of snow. The true record breaker, however, was in Rimini, Clarendon County, where an astonishing 24 inches fell in just 24 hours, a record that still stands today!
While South Carolina braved the chill, this storm didn’t just affect local towns. It made quite an impact, with its reach extending into neighboring states like Alabama, Georgia, and North Carolina. The roads were rendered nearly impassable, isolating communities and creating serious travel disruptions all around.
Even before this storm, Caesars Head in Greenville County was already making waves. On February 18, 1969, this area received nearly 30 inches of snow, securing its place in history as the largest snowfall in the state. Indeed, South Carolina’s top five snowfall accumulations reveal that the Upstate played a big role in the state’s snow saga:

Greenville has seen its fair share of snowy days with the second-largest snowfall on December 17, 1930, which dropped 14.4 inches and caused a fair amount of transportation delays. The largest snowfall in Greenville’s history came on February 15, 1902, when the region was hit with a staggering 15 inches. It disrupted not only the daily lives of residents but significantly impacted transportation services.
As if vying for attention, Charlotte, NC, also has a notable snow history, marking 20 years since its last snowfall of over a foot. That memorable storm occurred between February 26 and 27 in 2004, with a total of 13.2 inches. The biggest snowstorm recorded in Charlotte’s tales was back in February 1902, when the city was blanketed with 17.4 inches.
