Community Unites for Save A Life Day Amid Substance Misuse Challenges in Orangeburg

Community Comes Together for Save A Life Day

Orangeburg is buzzing with a spirit of community support and compassion as residents gathered for Save A Life Day on October 25. Hosted in the parking lot of Kimbrell’s Furniture, this vital event aimed to arm the public with essential information, resources, and life-saving products, especially Narcan, the antidote that can reverse the effects of an overdose.

Distributing Hope

The Courage Center, a dedicated recovery community organization located at 950 Holly St., played a pivotal role in the day’s activities. They successfully distributed around 25 Narcan kits to community members who either drove up or strolled over to the event. This thoughtful initiative struck a chord with many, as it provided not only tools but also the necessary awareness around substance misuse and the importance of being prepared to act in emergencies.

While those who received Narcan kits were thankful, the event was also a calling for larger conversations about the ongoing struggles with substance misuse in our communities. The Courage Center continues to be a vital resource for those in need of support and recovery. Mark your calendars, folks! They’re kicking off All Recovery meetings starting on November 19. Everyone is welcome, so if you’re looking for support or just a safe space to connect, give them a call at (803) 987-8700.

A Community on Alert

In another worrying incident, a father from Cordova was charged after his 9-month-old son tested positive for fentanyl. This alarming case serves as a stark reminder of the growing substance misuse issue impacting families. A traffic stop, which subsequently led to an investigation, resulted in the seizure of several illegal narcotics and the arrest of two individuals. These events underscore the pressing need for awareness and proactive measures to combat substance misuse in our neighborhoods.

Local Business Rebounds

10 months due to a devastating fire that resulted in a staggering $1 million loss. The beloved barbecue spot is now serving up delicious takeout and has expanded its outdoor seating area, adding delightful new items to the menu. Community members can once again gather to enjoy some good food and camaraderie, proving that everyone is ready to support their local favorites.
