Santa Swaps Traditional Sleigh for SWAT Truck in Lexington County Holiday Parade

Santa Swaps Reindeer for SWAT Truck in Lexington County Holiday Parade

Lexington County, S.C. got a little more festive this past Wednesday night as Santa Claus himself traded in his traditional sleigh for a shiny SWAT truck from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department. Gathering to spread some much-needed holiday cheer, Santa was joined by local deputies and even The Grinch for an enchanting community parade that brought smiles and joy to families across the county, despite the chilly November weather.

Parade of Cheer in Rainy Weather

Even though the night was a bit damp with rain and cool temperatures, nothing could dim the spirits of families who turned out in droves. Many people stood on their porches or crowded onto their front lawns, eager to catch a glimpse of Santa and share a wave or a warm greeting. This delightful tradition, first dreamed up by Sheriff Jay Koon four years ago, originally emerged as a response to the restrictions brought on by the pandemic. It was a way to bring Santa to neighborhoods when families were largely confined to their homes.

A Heartwarming Tradition

What started as a small idea has grown into a cherished annual event, and it’s easy to see why. Lexington County Sheriff’s Department Public Information Officer Adam Myrick shared just how rewarding this experience is for the deputies involved. “It’s really really special to see everybody’s face light up. We’ve seen toddlers, and even older senior citizens who are essentially shut in and they don’t ever leave their home, but tonight, they can come out and see Santa from their front porch,” he exclaimed, radiating joy. The sounds of laughter and cheer filled the air as Santa waved and spread holiday magic all around.

Making the Route

Every holiday season, the sheriff’s department asks families to cast their votes for their neighborhoods, inviting Santa to ride through as many areas as possible. Based on those results, deputies map out routes that cover much of the county, ensuring everyone gets a chance to experience the festivities. To make it even easier for families to track Santa, a nifty app is provided so everyone can follow his path in real-time, creating a joyful sense of anticipation. The parade typically lasts about two hours and takes place several nights throughout the holiday week.

Bringing Joy to the Community

The sense of community spirit radiates during these festive rides. Families come together, share a moment of joy, and for many children, seeing Santa brings a sparkle to their eyes that is truly priceless. With all the laughter and excitement, it’s a reminder that the holidays are a time for love, connection, and uplifting each other, especially when times may feel tough for some.

Continuing the Festive Tradition

As the years have gone by, this tradition has blossomed into a beautiful way of promoting community ties while fostering holiday cheer. Officers and deputies take immense pride in participating, and many have expressed how magical it feels to witness the smiles on the faces of residents young and old. With the festive season upon us, it surely looks like the beloved tradition of Santa’s parade will continue to spread warmth and happiness across Lexington County for many more years to come.

So folks, if you happen to hear the cheerful sounds of ho-ho-ho and see lights blinking in the distance, you’ll likely know that Santa is in town—making sure everyone gets their dose of holiday joy, one neighborhood at a time!
