Newberry Police Respond to Tragic Shooting Incident

April 20, 2024, at about 9:22 p.m., Newberry Police officers responded to a shooting on Emory Street, near Hunt Street. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found three individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. It’s devastating to think that violence has touched our community, and our hearts go out to the victims and their families.

One of the victims was taken to Prisma Health Richland Hospital for treatment, while another received on-site care for non-life-threatening injuries. Unfortunately, a third victim, identified as Troy Leonard Sims, a 53-year-old local, succumbed to his injuries. This marks a tragic moment for Newberry, and the Newberry City Police Department, alongside the Newberry County Coroner’s Office and the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED), is currently investigating the incident.

Community members are urged to come forward with any information they may have. Every little bit helps, and it’s through collaboration that we can support our law enforcement in solving this heartbreaking case. If you have any details, please reach out to the Newberry Police Department or contact Midlands Crime Stoppers.

Governor McMaster Honored for Supporting Firefighters

On a brighter note, let’s take a moment to celebrate our leaders! Recently, Governor Henry McMaster was honored with an induction into the Society of the Maltese Cross. This special recognition happened during the annual South Carolina State Firefighters’ Association Legislative Day, where the Governor was acknowledged for his steadfast support of firefighters and the values they represent.

The Maltese Cross symbolizes bravery, service, and dedication—the very qualities we admire in our first responders. It’s wonderful to see local leaders stepping up to support those who risk their lives to protect ours. The event highlighted the essential partnership between firefighters and legislators, underscoring the importance of teamwork in ensuring our safety.
