No. 16 South Carolina men’s tennis team secured a spot in the second round of the NCAA Tournament after defeating No. 54 Old Dominion with a 4-1 victory. The Gamecocks dominated the match by claiming the doubles point and allowing the Monarchs to only earn one singles point before clinching the win.
South Carolina started strong in doubles with their new No. 1 pair, Toby Samuel and James Story, ranked No. 43 in the country, securing the first win of the day. The duo displayed strong teamwork and strategy, winning their match 6-3 against their Old Dominion opponents.
At the No. 2 and No. 3 positions, the matches were closely contested with both sides earning early breaks. However, it was South Carolina’s No. 3 pair of Sean Daryabeigi and Casey Hoole who clinched the doubles point for the team with a solid 6-4 victory.
In singles play, No. 6 Toby Samuel continued his impressive form, winning his match 6-2, 6-4. This victory marked Samuel’s 16th win in his last 17 matches. Freshman Jelani Sarr and sophomore Lucas Andrade da Silva also secured crucial wins for the Gamecocks.
The match was clinched by da Silva, who fought back from a break down in the second set to claim a hard-fought victory. The Gamecocks now advance to the second round, set to take on the winner of NC State versus UNC-Wilmington.
