Baseball’s Messina Named All-American by D1 Baseball

University of South Carolina junior catcher Cole Messina has been recognized as a Second Team All-American by D1Baseball, as announced today. This achievement makes Messina a consensus All-American, joining other prestigious lists such as Baseball America, ABCA, NCBWA, and Perfect Game.

Messina had an outstanding season, leading Carolina with a .326 batting average. He also contributed 64 runs scored, 19 doubles, 21 home runs, 71 runs-batted-in, 50 walks, and eight stolen bases. On the defensive end, Messina demonstrated his prowess by throwing out 13 runners attempting to steal, including three in the Raleigh Regional opener against James Madison on May 31.

The talented catcher’s impressive performance earned him a spot on both the All-SEC Tournament team and the All-Raleigh Regional team. During the SEC Tournament, Messina set a record with 16 RBI in five games and delivered two crucial home runs, including the game-winner against Arkansas on May 22. For his exceptional play in conference contests, Messina was named to the All-SEC second team after hitting .330 with 12 doubles, six home runs, and 28 RBI.

Cole Messina now follows in the footsteps of his teammate Ethan Petry, becoming Carolina’s second consecutive consensus All-American. His remarkable season has solidified his reputation as one of the top players in college baseball.
