Get Ready, Lexington! The Old Mill Pond Trail is Opening Soon!

Are you ready for a new adventure in our lovely town? If you haven’t heard yet, Lexington is about to unveil the newly created Old Mill Pond Trail! Come join us for a ribbon-cutting ceremony this Friday, September 13, at 10:30 a.m. The festivities kick off at 711 East Main Street, right where all the excitement is happening. Lexington Mayor Hazel Livingston and some of our dedicated town council members are all set to celebrate this fantastic addition to our community!

What’s All the Hype About?

So, what makes the Old Mill Pond Trail such a big deal? This impressive 1.15-mile paved loop wraps gracefully around the picturesque Lexington Mill Pond, providing a scenic escape right in the heart of our town. You can walk, jog, or even bike along the trail, enjoying both the fresh air and stunning views. The trail features several bridges, lookout points, and cozy seating areas, giving everyone – from nature lovers to families – a chance to connect with the great outdoors.

The trail has been a dream in the making since the Town’s 2012 Vision Plan, which included plans for a walking trail around the beautiful pond. However, as many of us remember, the challenging 2015 flood changed those plans. The flood caused significant damage, including the breaching of local dams, affecting the sensitive ecosystem of the Old Mill area. For nearly nine years, the pond stayed empty, but thanks to a strong public/private partnership, that grim chapter has finally come to an end!

What to Expect on Opening Day

On Friday, we invite everyone to come out and enjoy this momentous occasion. Expect *lots* of friendly faces, smiles, and perhaps even a few surprise giveaways! The ribbon-cutting ceremony will mark the official opening, and it’s a chance for our community to come together to appreciate the marvelous transformation that has taken place. Plus, it’s a fantastic opportunity to walk the trail for the first time!

Whether you’re a longtime resident or new to Lexington, there’s something for everyone. Take a stroll along the trail with your loved ones, enjoy seeing the local wildlife, or simply take in the beauty of nature. It’s a wonderful way to de-stress after a long week and embrace what our town has to offer.

Weather Considerations

And if you’re wondering about the weather, we’re lucky to have some lovely conditions lined up for opening day! With a high of 83°F and mainly sunny skies, it sounds like the perfect day to get outside and explore. Just a light breeze from the northeast at around 5 to 10 mph will make it even more delightful. As evening approaches, temperatures will drop to a comfy low of around 59°F, so consider bringing a light jacket if you plan to stay out! It’s an ideal day for a stroll!

A Community Triumph

As we gather together to celebrate the Old Mill Pond Trail, let’s remember the community effort that brought this vision to life. It’s not just a trail – it symbolizes resilience and the hard work of so many who believed in this project and worked tirelessly to make it a reality. This opening represents the unity and spirit that our town is known for.

We hope everyone can join us for this special day in Lexington. It’s all about connecting with nature and each other while making some beautiful memories. Let’s celebrate together!
