NEWBERRY, S.C. — A startling turn of events unfolded on a typical Monday afternoon, as a shooting incident rocked the peaceful streets of Newberry. This dramatic episode occurred in the 1200 block of Wilson Road and involved two men who were caught up in a dangerous exchange of gunfire.
According to the Newberry Police Chief, Kevin Goodman, the whole incident began when one man, identified as the ex-boyfriend of a female victim, spotted her enjoying some time with another guy in a vehicle. Fueled by jealousy, the ex-boyfriend didn’t think twice before opening fire on the car which contained both the female victim and her new companion.
The situation quickly escalated. As the ex-boyfriend attempted to make a hasty escape, the male passenger in the victim’s vehicle jumped out and retaliated, firing back at the ex-boyfriend. It was a scene straight out of a movie, but the harsh reality was that a 1-year-old child was present in the ex-boyfriend’s car during the dangerous exchange.
Thankfully, local law enforcement responded to the chaos with remarkable speed. Deputies from the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office were already on high alert and managed to apprehend the ex-boyfriend at a convenience store on Wilson Road, just 1.4 miles from where the shooting took place. He was driving a white vehicle and was taken into custody without any further incident.
As for the female victim, she was quickly transported to Prisma Health Richland Hospital by Newberry County EMS. Chief Goodman confirmed that her injuries were non-life-threatening, which is certainly a relief for her family and friends.
Currently, two individuals are in custody as detectives sift through the details of what transpired. Authorities are expected to announce charges by Tuesday morning, November 26, 2024. In a reassuring note, Chief Goodman emphasized that this troubling incident appears to be an isolated case, and he expressed gratitude for the support from the community and the Sheriff’s office.
As the investigation continues, residents of Newberry are likely keeping a close eye on developments. While most people enjoy their day-to-day lives in this friendly community, moments like these serve as a reminder of the unexpected events that can unfold.
Chief Goodman made sure to reassure the public, stating, “I would like to thank the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office and the community for their assistance with this incident.” His words seem to resonate with the community, who undoubtedly hope for a swift resolution to this alarming affair.
As the dust settles from this shocking event, many are left wondering what the future holds for those involved. It’s crucial for the community to come together during such difficult times and support one another in any way possible. Stay tuned for updates as more information becomes available regarding the charges and the ongoing investigation.
We can only hope that the individuals directly affected by this incident find peace and healing, and that the community’s spirit remains strong in the face of adversity.
