Newberry – Six Newberry County high school students have been chosen as delegates to the 77th Palmetto Girls State program, announced by the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 24 on May 28, 2024. Three local high schools, Newberry Academy, Whitmire Community School, and Mid-Carolina High School, will be represented in the much-anticipated event.
Following are the representatives sponsored by the ALA Unit 24 of Newberry:
The week-long program, dating from June 9th to 15th, will be held at Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC. Palmetto Girls State is a distinctive forum devised to guide South Carolina’s ascending high school senior girls in comprehending government functionalities and the political process. It’s a vital platform that immerses the young women in practical experiences and empowers them to wield their civic rights responsibly in their imminent future.
In the program, attendees will assemble a mythical state, the “State of Palmetto.” Here the delegates, or the “citizens of Palmetto,” will choose and organize the cities, counties, and the state of the model government, and appoint officials for all levels of their structured government. It’s a vivid opportunity for them to apply their learned knowledge, foster teamwork skills, and understand the complexities of the governmental system while making new friends in the process.
With excitement building around the event, participants look forward to acquiring valuable knowledge, developing leadership skills, and experiencing the democratic process. The program initiates a critical conversation among the participants, equipping them with an improved understanding of civic duty, citizenship, and democracy. It will undeniably be a significant footstep in their journey towards becoming the future leaders of our society.
Wishing all the selected Newberry County high school students a fruitful and enlightening experience at the 77th Palmetto Girls State program.
