On a sunny Saturday afternoon in Gaffney, South Carolina, the Newberry College men’s lacrosse team took the field to face one of the toughest challenges of the season — the No. 3 Limestone Saints. Finding themselves ranked No. 13 in the polls, the Newberry squad entered the game with a record of 7 wins and 4 losses overall and a solid 4-1 record in the South Atlantic Conference (SAC). Fans were hoping for an exciting match, but the outcome left the team with a bit to ponder.
From the very start of the game, Newberry showcased their determination. They came out swinging, challenging Limestone right from the opening whistle. The players were fired up and it was clear they weren’t backing down. However, as the clock ticked on, the scoreboard began to tilt in favor of the Saints. By halftime, Newberry found themselves trailing at 7-2, but the spirit and fight of the team remained undeterred.
Despite the score, there were bright spots in Newberry’s performance. Leading the offense was Gage Vigar, who had an impressive outing with a total of three goals and also picked up two ground balls. He was a spark for the team, exhibiting both skill and tenacity. Not far behind, Liam Vollans contributed significantly, earning two points, along with two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Their offensive efforts didn’t go unnoticed and certainly brought hope to Newberry supporters.
In the net, goalie Ben McMullen put up a solid defensive front, making five saves throughout the contest. His efforts were crucial in keeping Newberry in the game as long as they were, showcasing both skill and quick reflexes while facing Limestone’s onslaught. Every save was met with cheers from fans, who recognized the grit McMullen demonstrated on the field.
Defensively, Kaleb Malyon stood out by causing four turnovers, effectively disrupting Limestone’s offensive plays. His energetic presence on the field made it difficult for the Saints to settle into a rhythm, as he constantly pressured their attackers. It was a team effort as they wore down Limestone’s offense, demonstrating a blend of determination and strategy.
In the end, the scoreboard didn’t favor Newberry, as the game concluded with a score of 19-8 in favor of Limestone. Despite the loss, the game was a testament to Newberry’s resilience. The players worked hard on both sides of the ball, making every possession a challenge for the Saints.
