CHAPIN, S.C. — The small town of Chapin is buzzing with concern as locals remain on high alert following reports that an armed and dangerous murder suspect, Nicholas Hamlett, is believed to be in the area. The 45-year-old is wanted for a shocking crime that took place in Monroe County, Tennessee, where authorities allege he killed a hiker and then stole the victim’s identity.
News of Hamlett’s possible presence in Chapin has quickly spread, rattling nerves among residents. Local man Stan Bugner recounted his feelings after hearing about the suspect on Thursday night. “When you have somebody that’s done something wrong, especially murdering somebody, it makes you a little uncomfortable, especially at night, you know? You feel like somebody could sneak up,” he mentioned.
Bugner resides on the outskirts of town, in a more rural area, which he says makes him and his family feel even more vulnerable. He took immediate action, turning on his security system in response to the news. “We live right outside of town, so it just makes it a little scarier,” he added.
Hamlett’s violent history has made him a person of serious concern for local law enforcement. He is described as a dangerous individual known for his violent acts, and he’s believed to be armed. According to police reports, he often uses the alias “Nic Hamlett,” which raises additional warnings for those trying to identify him.
The U.S. Marshals Service is leading the investigation into Hamlett’s whereabouts. They have confirmed that he has ties to the Columbia area, making the situation even more urgent. Law enforcement officials have warned local community members to remain vigilant, especially those living near woodland areas or abandoned properties where Hamlett could be hiding.
Deputy Commander of the Carolinas Region Fugitive Task Force, Carlos Flores, has advised residents to lock their doors and remain on high alert, stating, “At this point, he does have ties in the city of Columbia…we advise the whole Midlands area to be on the lookout for this guy.”
Flores further elaborated on the situation, urging residents to be proactive about their safety. “He is possibly hiding in the wooded areas, even more likely to try to get into abandoned houses and campers. We recommend they stay vigilant out there,” he said.
As the search continues, the public is urged not to approach Hamlett if they see him. Law enforcement stresses the importance of contacting 9-1-1 immediately if he is spotted, as he is considered highly dangerous.
Local police and marshals are working tirelessly to track Hamlett down and ensure public safety in the face of this alarming situation. For residents in Chapin and the surrounding Middles area, taking safety precautions and remaining informed is crucial during these uncertain times.
As the story develops, it’s vital for the community to come together, look out for one another, and report any suspicious activity. In a tight-knit town like Chapin, every set of eyes counts!
