Columbia, SC, is gearing up for the 37th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration Service on January 25, 2025. The event will feature a wreath-laying ceremony followed by a keynote address by Dr. John H. Dozier, President of Columbia College. This significant gathering aims to honor Dr. King’s legacy while promoting unity and reflection within the community.
Columbia is all set to honor the inspiring legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with the 37th Annual Commemoration Service, and you won’t want to miss it! Mark your calendars for January 25, 2025, as festivities kick off at 4:00 p.m. at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park, located at 2300 Green Street, Columbia, SC 29205.
Before the main event, there will be a heartfelt wreath-laying ceremony at the corner of Harden and Green Streets at 3:06 p.m.. This touching ritual is a wonderful way to remember Dr. King’s contributions and influence while gathering the community’s spirit.
The commemoration service naturally coincides with the national Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, which falls on January 20, 2025. It’s not just a day off—it’s a day dedicated to celebrating the values Dr. King fought for: equality, justice, and brotherhood.
This year’s keynote speaker is none other than Dr. John H. Dozier, the President of Columbia College. With an impressive background that spans numerous sectors, Dr. Dozier brings a wealth of knowledge to the podium. He is well-rooted in higher education with over 21 years of experience as a senior administrator.
Dr. Dozier’s journey began as a corporate consultant and executive before he took pivotal roles at the City Colleges of Chicago, such as Chief Information Officer and Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs. He then became the first Chief Diversity Officer and Senior Associate Provost at the University of South Carolina, making waves in advancing diversity and inclusion.
This distinguished leader also boasts several accolades, including the Richard A. Rempel Faculty Award in 2016 and the Distinguished Alumnus Award from South Carolina State University in 2015. He serves on notable boards, including Historic Columbia and the EdVenture Children’s Museum, and is currently part of the Boston Arts Academy Foundation Board and the MIT Press Management Board.
Although he carries many hats in academia and community service, Dr. Dozier values his role as a devoted family man. He and his wife, Victoria, have been happily married for 27 years and are proud parents to three children: Olivia, Evans, and Sophia.
Worried about parking? No need! The City of Columbia will provide a bus shuttle service for attendees. The shuttle will run from the parking deck at 2221 Devine Street, which you can easily access from Lee Street.
