Columbia, get ready to bask in the sunshine and soak in some knowledge! With a delightful forecast of sunny skies and a high of 81°F, it’s the perfect setting for a new, exciting initiative in our community. On October 10, the City of Columbia kicked off the “Columbia Streams Art” public art program, unveiling a series of community mini libraries at St. John’s Baptist Church and Preparatory School. Doesn’t that sound like fun?
The event was attended by some fantastic local leaders, including Mayor Daniel Rickenmann and District One City Councilwoman Tina Herbert. They joined forces with Pastor Dr. Jamey O. Graham from St. John Baptist Church and several neighborhood leaders to explain how these charming mini libraries aim to enhance literacy across our vibrant Columbia communities.
Imagine this: colorful mini libraries where you can grab a book, return a book, and maybe even find a new favorite read! Mayor Rickenmann expressed his excitement at the announcement, noting, “As we were thinking of ways to make impacts in our neighborhoods, not only through art, we wanted to ensure we left something that would cultivate creative thoughts in our young people’s minds.”
These unique mini libraries are taking the form of newspaper vending machines, a clever choice that adds a touch of nostalgia while being incredibly functional. What makes them even more special is that they’ve been vibrantly painted by talented kiddos in Columbia’s Parks & Recreation after-school programs, along with seniors from art classes at the Lourie Center. It’s truly a community effort, weaving together contributions from different ages and talents.
These little libraries aren’t just beautiful; they’re also stocked with an array of books donated by our generous community during a book drive held at Columbia’s City Hall. Such a fantastic way to foster a love for reading, don’t you think?
The first wave of mini libraries will be popping up at various locations around town, making it easier than ever to find your next page-turner. Here’s a sneak peek at where you can find them:
The enthusiasm for these mini libraries has been palpable, and it’s safe to say they will have a significant impact on our neighborhoods. They’re more than just libraries; they’re a way to strengthen community ties and inspire creativity in children by making literature accessible and fun!
So, whether you’re a parent looking to instill a love of reading in your child, a book lover eager to share your favorite read, or someone who values community spirit, be on the lookout for these delightful additions around the city. Let’s come together as a community to celebrate our love for books and art! Here’s to sunny days and a bright future for Columbia!
