Columbia’s Malfunction Junction Makes Big Strides Before Holidays
As we stride into December, Columbia is buzzing with excitement, especially with progress on the notorious Malfunction Junction project moving forward! This area, where Interstates 20 and 26 meet, has had residents scratching their heads for what feels like forever. But just like holiday lights going up across town, big changes are finally taking shape!
A Long-Term Commitment
This massive undertaking, known as Carolina Crossroads, is hailed as the largest transportation project in South Carolina’s history, and for good reason! It has been in the works for over a decade and is expected to cost around $1.7 billion. Though that may sound steep, the payoff is huge—saving drivers a whopping 112 hours a year stuck in traffic. Can you imagine what you could do with all that extra time?
The need for better infrastructure is clear. Around 237,000 vehicles pass through the Malfunction Junction daily, which undoubtedly adds to the frayed nerves of commuters. As the holiday season approaches, the last thing anyone wants is to be delayed in traffic while trying to get home or grab those last-minute gifts!
Progress on the Ground
Recently opened is a new bridge from Broad River Road to I-20 westbound, with another one currently under construction. Exciting improvements, such as the new bridge leading to Colonial Life Boulevard that opened on November 14, are giving commuters a glimpse of what’s to come.
What Lies Ahead
Planned future phases, stretching until 2029, will involve extensive improvements, including changes to the I-20 and I-26 interchange. Plans also include widening I-26 from Bush River Road to Broad River Road—another much-needed facelift for the area’s infrastructure.
A Spark of Hope for Commuters
As Columbia gears up for the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, the heartening progress on the Malfunction Junction project feels like a gift that keeps on giving. Drivers in the area can soon expect smoother travels ahead, just in time for festive gatherings and holiday cheer!
