In the quiet town of Lexington, South Carolina, a series of dramatic events unfolded recently that left many residents on the edge of their seats. A local man, Kevin Romero, 22, now finds himself facing multiple charges after stealing a Lexington County deputy’s patrol vehicle and leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase.
The drama kicked off on a Monday night in the 3400 block of Augusta Road when a deputy responded to a call regarding a civil dispute. What started as a routine call quickly escalated into something far more serious. According to Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon, when the deputy arrived, he encountered Romero holding a bat. Despite repeated orders from the deputy to drop the bat, Romero was resistant but eventually complied.
However, things took another turn when Romero began reaching into his pockets, informing the deputy that he had a knife. “The deputy was able to get the knife out of Romero’s pocket and put it on the ground,” Sheriff Koon stated. As the deputies tried to detain him, a struggle broke out. The tension heightened as other officers were called in for backup, revealing a serious and dangerous situation on the deputy’s hands.
During the struggle, things took a major turn when Romero managed to get to the driver’s seat of the deputy’s patrol vehicle. In a shocking turn of events, he was able to shift the car into drive and sped off, prompting a full-blown chase. “Once Romero was in the vehicle, he shifted it into drive, drove away and initiated a pursuit,” Koon explained.
A passerby, witnessing the dramatic scene, stepped in to help the deputy. Together, they tailed Romero in the passerby’s vehicle while additional patrol units were dispatched to join the pursuit. Things got even more intense as several law enforcement agencies joined forces to monitor the situation and ensure everyone’s safety.
The pursuit finally came to a conclusion when Romero crashed the stolen patrol vehicle on Interstate Highway 20 near mile marker five in Aiken County. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during this chaotic episode. “Romero was taken into custody right after the crash and transported to the Lexington County Detention Center,” Koon shared.
Thanks to the quick actions and collaboration among various law enforcement agencies—like the State Law Enforcement Division, South Carolina Highway Patrol, Georgia State Patrol, Lexington Police Department, Batesburg-Leesville Police Department, Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, and the North Augusta Department of Public Safety—the situation ended without any serious harm.
Sheriff Koon commended the teamwork, stating, “This situation ended peacefully and without anybody getting hurt because a lot of agencies worked together.” Meanwhile, Kevin Romero remains in jail and is facing additional charges in the days to come as the investigation continues.
This unsettling incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of law enforcement work and the importance of community cooperation. As the dust settles, residents of Lexington can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that quick actions by local law enforcement helped bring this wild pursuit to a safe conclusion.
