Many Lexington County students have crossed the stage, turned their tassels, and are now looking forward to the new future awaiting them. Among those graduating this year, three particularly impressive students reflect on the winding journeys that brought them to their graduation day and share their hopes for what’s to come.
Ruby Gonzalez Armenta tackled high school in three short years and is now ready to move onto her next challenge – joining the Marines. Longing to be part of something bigger and take on challenging roles has inspired her to follow this path. Armenta acknowledges that this decision comes with risks, but to her, life is all about taking risks. She now eagerly awaits boot camp, where she hopes to continue her journey of self-improvement.
Armenta wasn’t always focused on joining the Marines. Initially considering the Air Force, a conversation with a recruiter clarified her values align more closely with those of the Marines. Her academic achievements, which included graduating with honors within the top 15 of around 200 seniors, would serve her well in the combat field she hopes to pursue.
Kateryna Mazur, another bright graduate, moved from Ukraine with her family nearly two years ago, seeking safety and stability. The family managed to settle in South Carolina with the support of sponsors from Chapin Baptist Church, who provided crucial help in navigating through the new environment.
Mazur’s graduation from Chapin High School embodied the quintessential “American” rites of passage she recalled watching in films. Her experience of shifting cultures has further fueled her ambition. She now plans to study art at Spartanburg Methodist College for two years before transferring to pursue web design.
Billy Bishay, a resilient graduate of Chapin High School, has navigated a path that extends from coast to coast before leading him to the doors of The Citadel. Overcoming his mother’s untimely passing and consequent family relocations, Bishay has shown incredible resilience.
His personal journey filled with diversions and challenges played a significant role in his decision to attend The Citadel. He’s aiming to connect with like-minded students, confront challenges, and pursue a career in physical therapy.
Whether they are heading to boot camp, college, or other pursuits, these graduates represent the diverse journeys that have led them to this moment. Their optimism, tenacity, and ambition serve as examples to their fellow Lexington County graduates and to anyone embarking on a new chapter in life.
