Have you heard the buzz in Lexington, South Carolina? The Lexington County Garden Club is officially back in action, and they’re inviting all green thumbs, or even those with just a little sprinkling of curiosity, to join their blossoming community! On a sunny Wednesday afternoon, approximately 20 enthusiastic members gathered for their first meeting of the season, kicking off what promises to be an exciting year ahead.
Though the club is relatively new, having just celebrated its first anniversary, its members are a charming mix of beginners and seasoned gardeners. The group sprouted from a dozen local individuals whose love of gardening called them to connect. Many had searched high and low on the Garden Club of South Carolina’s website for a Lexington chapter, but when none existed, they decided to take matters into their own hands. An email campaign was launched, and thus, the Lexington chapter was born! The very first meeting took place at a nearby Panera Bread, a cozy spot that seemed to nurture their growing community.
This season, the club plans to meet monthly from September through May, filled with engaging programs, field trips to local gardens over the summer, and even some hands-on service projects that benefit the community. Excitingly, they’re gearing up for their first-ever plant sale on Saturday, October 12, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at 413 Hendrix St. in Lexington. Local gardeners and plant lovers won’t want to miss this chance to snag some beautiful plants!
During each monthly gathering, the club invites a speaker to share their expertise on various topics. Members can expect to learn about everything from medicinal plants to the best native plants suited for our South Carolina climate. Cynthia Swann, a dedicated club member, highlighted how the club focuses on all aspects of gardening, saying, “In addition to actually gardening and planting flowers or bushes, we learn about pollinators and bees and butterflies and how to take care of caterpillars so that those butterflies continue to exist.” Isn’t that wonderful?
For those who might feel intimidated about gardening, you’re not alone! Member Cynthia Wilson confided, “I’m more of a house planter than an outside person, but I love the challenge. I did grow tomatoes!” She shared how gardening serves as an accessible gateway to food security, especially in today’s economic climate, where food prices can leave us feeling uneasy at the grocery store. “The price of food is high now. Gardening club, they’re teaching you how to raise your own food.” This message resonates with anyone looking to grow their own fresh produce.
The Lexington County Garden Club isn’t just about plants; it’s a community filled with friendship, learning, and collaboration. Their meetings happen at Saxa Gotha Presbyterian Church located at 5503 Sunset Blvd. in Lexington, every first Wednesday of the month from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. They’re on the lookout for new members who share their passion for gardening and everything green! Interested folks are welcomed to reach out via email at info.lcgarden@gmail.com.
So, whether you’re a seasoned gardener or someone who just wants to dabble in the world of plants, there’s a place for you in the Lexington County Garden Club. Come grow with them, make new friends, and dig into the joyful adventure of gardening!
