Lexington County Plans to Expand Curbside Trash Pickup Amid Community Demand

Lexington County Considers Expanding Curbside Trash Pickup

LEXINGTON, S.C. — Exciting plans are on the horizon for residents of Lexington County as officials consider expanding curbside trash pickup throughout the entire area. This proposal comes after numerous complaints from residents living in outlying and rural parts of the county. Many have expressed frustration over inconsistent trash collection, with some residents reportedly waiting weeks for their waste to be picked up.

Tackling the Trash Troubles

Solid waste director, Lee McIntyre, shed some light on these pressing concerns. He explained how the new curbside pickup program could greatly benefit both the residents and the waste management workers. “Having curbside for the county would help us out at our collection centers,” McIntyre noted. “Our collection centers are OK now, but based on the growth, soon we are going to be at capacity.”

This is particularly important as the county has been experiencing rapid population growth. McIntyre highlighted that the need for better trash management has become crucial due to the limitations of the current collection centers. One facility is set to undergo construction, but McIntyre shared that the funding for this project was secured nearly a decade ago, showing the lengthy process behind these improvements.

Listening to the Community

It’s evident that many in the community are eager for change. One resident, Marissa Newson, was surprised to learn about her neighbors’ trash collection struggles. “They should do that, I mean, I didn’t know that was a privilege. I thought that was a universal thing,” Newson expressed. She believes every neighborhood should have curbside pickup, remarking, “You have the availability to do so, so just do it.”

This sentiment resonates deeply within the community. Residents deserve reliable and accessible trash services, especially as the county expands and more people settle into the area. Under the proposed program, those currently dependent on local drop-off locations for their waste disposal would find relief and convenience in having their trash picked up right from their doorsteps.

What’s Next?

As it stands, the proposed curbside pickup program requires additional steps before it can become a reality. If the county council approves a second reading of the initiative, it will then open the floor for public input. It is important for community members to voice their thoughts and concerns, as these are crucial in shaping how the program will be implemented.

If all goes according to plan, residents can expect the program to take about two years to come to fruition. This timeline allows for careful planning and strategizing to ensure that the transition to curbside pickup is as seamless as possible.

A Brighter Future for Trash Collection

The proposal to expand curbside trash pickup in Lexington County could mark a significant step towards improving the quality of life for residents. Smarter waste management could lead to cleaner neighborhoods and a lesser burden on collection centers, allowing them to allocate their resources more efficiently.

As the council moves forward with discussions, community members are encouraged to stay engaged and actively participate in the planning process. Together, they can help shape a more inclusive and efficient waste collection system that meets the needs of all residents. Lexington County is on the brink of exciting changes that could greatly enhance everyday living — and it’s something that everyone can look forward to!
