Drama unfolds at Lake Murray on Championship Monday of Bassmaster Elite Series event
Champions battling for a win
Columbia, South Carolina- A true spectacle for the fans, Championship Monday of the Minn Kota Bassmaster Elite Series at Lake Murray presents a thrilling contest that certainly isn’t for the faint-hearted. With unexpected twists and turns, the day offers an intense competition between some powerful contenders including Patrick Walters, a five-time Bassmaster winner known for his amazing victory margins, trying to keep his lead against some fairly competing, hungry young guns.
Living up to the expectations on the beginning of the championship, Walters led the first three days with an impressive performance. This South Carolina native had scheduled the final weigh-in to take place on Sunday. However, due to unforeseen severe weather conditions, the competition was postponed on Thursday, leading Walters to maintain his position until the Championship Monday.
Walters’ rivals eyeing the prize
The most notable challengers trying to steal victory from Walters include fellow South Carolinian and rookie J.T. Thompkins, who has cashed in on 22 out of 33 career tournaments he has participated in, and young sensation Trey McKinney from Carbondale, Illinois. The latter, breaking new ground at the age of just 19, has garnered considerable attention by becoming the youngest angler to qualify for the Bassmaster Elite Series. This skilled young gun has also scored many firsts, such as being the first to join the Bassmaster Century Club by weighing 100 pounds in a tournament, leading the Progressive Bassmaster Angler of the Year points race, rising to the top of the Dakota Lithium Rookie of the Year points race, and winning an Elite Series event.
All eyes are now set on the stage at Dreher Island State Park to witness who will outsmart the others and claim the title of Lake Murray Elite Series Champion. The final weigh-in is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Dreher Island State Park.
The Ultimate Battle: What, Where, and Who?
At stake in this fierce tournament are the bragging rights, the coveted championship trophy, a $100,000 first-place prize, and a total purse of more than $766,000. The tournament brings together 102 of the world’s best bass anglers, including the Progressive Insurance Bassmaster Angler of the Year leader, Trey McKinney of Carbondale, Ill., and South Carolina pros Todd Auten, Brandon Cobb, Bryan New, JT Thompkins, Patrick Walters, and Jason Williamson.
The Minn Kota Bassmaster Elite Series event, an extravaganza at catered to the angling community, takes place at Dreher Island State Park, located at 3677 State Park Road, Prosperity, S.C., 29127. The event is free and is open to the public. While the parking fee on Dreher Island is $3 per adult, for adults aged 65 years and older, it is $1.50, and for those aged 6-15 years, it’s just $1.
