Tragic Incident at Lake Murray: Body Found After Car Accident

Lake Murray, SC – The serene waters of Lake Murray were recently disrupted by a tragic event that has left the local community in shock. On Friday, September 13, 2024, the South Carolina State Highway Patrol (SCHP) confirmed that a man’s body was discovered floating in the lake, prompting a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

What Happened?

According to SCHP Corporal Nick Pye, the unfortunate event began very early on Wednesday morning, September 11, at around 1:00 a.m. Darius Marche Dendy, a 34-year-old resident of Columbia, was driving his Dodge Charger when the car reportedly lost control. It careened off the guard railing of the dam, flipped, and plunged into the water near the towers—an area that many locals regard as having beautiful views, but can be quite treacherous under the right conditions. Unfortunately, Dendy’s car sank without a trace, and it wasn’t until two days later that the search operations yielded a grim discovery.

Discovery of the Body

On Friday morning, after two days of uncertainty, Dendy’s lifeless body was spotted floating in the water. The Lexington County Coroner, Margaret Fisher, confirmed that he was the driver of the vehicle. Following the recovery of the body, the dive team from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department worked diligently to locate the submerged car. In a coordinated effort, they were able to pull the vehicle from the depths of Lake Murray using heavy wrecker equipment.

Community Impact

This incident has stirred deep emotions within the three counties surrounding the lake—Lexington, Richland, and Saluda. Residents from local communities such as Chapin, Irmo, and Red Bank/White Knoll are coming together to offer their condolences to Dendy’s family. Conversations ripple through neighborhoods, as people reflect on the fragility of life and the unpredictable nature of accidents. It serves as a poignant reminder for everyone to be cautious, especially when driving in challenging conditions.

Ongoing Investigation

The situation remains under investigation by the SCHP and the coroner’s office. As authorities piece together the details leading up to this chilling event, community members gather information from troopers and are hopeful for answers. They are eager to learn more about what might have caused Dendy to lose control of his vehicle.

Safety Measures and Precautions

In light of this tragedy, local leaders and safety advocates are reminding residents to remain vigilant about road safety, especially when near the lakes and bodies of water that surround the area. Many community members are calling for more robust safety measures along the dam, including better signage and barriers to prevent future accidents.

As we wait for more details to emerge regarding the investigation, we can only hope for healing for Dendy’s family and friends during this difficult time. The entire Lake Murray community is extending thoughts and prayers as they mourn the loss of one of their own.

Stay Informed

For further updates, local residents are encouraged to stay tuned to community announcements and follow developments regarding this ongoing investigation. While the waters of Lake Murray may return to their calm state, the impact of this incident will resonate within the hearts of many.
