As the sun rises over Irmo, excitement is brewing for the much-anticipated 50th Annual Irmo Okra Strut scheduled to take place at Moore Park this weekend, on September 27 and 28. This year’s festival promises to bring joy, celebration, and a nostalgic look back at how it all began in 1973, when a small arts and crafts fair was held by the Lake Murray-Irmo Woman’s Club. Little did they know, it would grow into an event that now attracts around 25,000 attendees each year!
The festivities kick off Friday evening around 7:30 p.m. with a thrilling performance by Simply Shania, a Shania Twain tribute band, followed by a show from Cowboy Mouth on the Prisma Health Amphitheater main stage. It’s the perfect way to set the mood for the weekend!
But the fun doesn’t stop there. On Saturday morning, you can join in the excitement at the annual Irmo Okra Strut Parade, starting at 9 a.m. The parade kicks off from CrossRoads Intermediate, making its way down Saint Andrews Rd. to Lake Murray Blvd. Make sure to arrive early, though, because street traffic will be closed off at 8:45 a.m. to make way for all the fun!
Throughout Saturday, attendees can peruse a wide selection of arts and crafts vendors, indulge in delicious food, and enjoy various rides and amusements that will be sure to delight festival-goers of all ages. From fun games to delicious local eats, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
As the sun sets on Saturday, the entertainment continues with live performances starting at 6 p.m. You’ll want to check out the Irmo Battle of the Bands winner Say Femme, followed by a roaring tribute to the legendary band Queen with the act Absolute Queen.
However, festival-goers should prepare for some rain this weekend. The forecast predicts a cloudy day with a high of 78F and a 100% chance of rain. It’s expected to rain between 1 to 2 inches, especially overnight. ESE winds are likely to pick up, reaching speeds of 20 to 30 mph. While the event is a rain-or-shine affair, some performances on the main stage may be adjusted due to weather conditions.
The 50th Annual Irmo Okra Strut is more than just a festival; it’s a celebration of community, culture, and joy. So grab your umbrellas, bring your rain boots, and get ready for an amazing time. This is a golden opportunity to not only enjoy the atmosphere and festivities but also reflect on the rich history that makes Irmo so special.
Don’t miss out on this wonderful weekend—be sure to check the festival’s updates for any weather-related changes, and come ready to celebrate!
