Firefighters from the Irmo Fire District teamed up with units from the City of West Columbia Fire Department, Columbia Fire Department, and Lexington County Fire Service on Thursday, March 21, 2024, to combat a dangerous two-alarm fire at an abandoned apartment building.
The empty apartment complex was situated in the 200 block of Berryhill Road in the vicinity of the St. Andrews Road area of the county. While the fire engines from the Irmo Fire District were still on route to the location, a separate unit arrived at the scene and immediately called for a 2nd alarm due to the intensity of the event.
Upon arrival, the crews from the Irmo unit were met with an enormous volume of smoke billowing out and fierce flames leaping from the roof. The rapid response from the crews and their quick decision-making process played a significant role in bringing the situation under control. They promptly deployed the ladder and tower trucks then began sending water down onto the raging fire.
After approximately two hours of dedicated firefighting against the aggressive inferno, the fire was successfully brought under control. The units stayed on the scene after dawn, ensuring complete extinguishment and administering a thorough safety check to certify that the fire was out entirely.
The cause behind this devastating fire is still undisclosed as of yet and is currently under intensive investigation by the proper authorities. Prevention efforts and enhanced firefighting activities, when seen necessary, will be adopted in the future to avoid such occurrences.
The firefighting organizations that offered their tireless service in the face of danger to contain the fire include the Lexington County Fire Service, the Irmo Fire District, the West Columbia Fire Department, and the Columbia Fire Department.
Their coordinated efforts throughout the incident display the spirit of unified teamwork between emergency response units and underscore the valiant acts of our local heroes during times of uncertainty.
The people of Lexington County express their sincere gratitude to the brave firefighters from all departments involved who risked their lives to prevent further catastrophe.
