Palm Beach County Schools Close as Hurricane Helene Approaches

Hurricane Helene Forces Closures and Cancellations in Palm Beach County

Palm Beach County has announced the closure of public schools on Thursday due to the approaching Hurricane Helene, which is expected to make landfall in Florida’s Big Bend region on Thursday evening. The safety of students and staff is the primary concern, leading to the cancellation of all after-school activities, including sports events that were planned for that day.

The Palm Beach County School District released a statement saying, “All extracurricular activities, after-school programs, sports, school meetings, and other on-campus events are also canceled.” This decision aligns with advice from the National Hurricane Center and local emergency management officials, who have noted that the anticipated sustained winds are expected to exceed limits for safe school bus operation.

In addition, several private schools have also called off their activities. Oxbridge Academy has already canceled Wednesday’s girls golf match, along with Thursday’s boys golf, middle school volleyball, and cross country events. The excitement around local sports has been dampened by this storm, but safety is clearly the priority for all involved.

The high-profile football match between Inlet Grove and King’s Academy has been rescheduled to Monday, September 30, at 6 p.m., providing a new opportunity for students to compete following the storm.

As of now, the football and volleyball events that were initially set for Thursday have been postponed or canceled, leaving players and fans awaiting updates on rescheduling. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide necessary updates as they become available.

Stay safe, Palm Beach County, as we face Hurricane Helene together!
