In another exciting day of high school sports, the Twin Cities and surrounding areas hosted a series of thrilling semifinal matches in soccer and volleyball.
Starting with boys soccer, Eagan pulled off a dramatic victory against Minneapolis Washburn, winning 1-0 in overtime during the Class 3A state tournament semifinals. In another semifinal match, Maple Grove defeated Andover with a score of 3-1.
Moving to Class 2A, Holy Angels secured a spot in the finals by beating Orono 2-0, while Totino-Grace also made an impressive showing by defeating Blake 2-0.
In Class 1A, the semifinals were equally exciting. Rochester Lourdes triumphed over St. Cloud Cathedral in a close match, winning 4-3. St. Paul Academy faced off against Pine Island, which resulted in a 0-0 tie, but St. Paul Academy advanced by winning the shootout 4-3.
For the girls soccer third-place matches, Eagan ended their game against East Ridge in a 2-2 tie. In Class 2A, Mankato East claimed third place with a narrow 1-0 win over Orono. Finally, Esko took home the third place in Class 1A, defeating St. Charles 3-1.
Shifting gears to volleyball, the Class 4A Section 1 semifinals saw Lakeville North defeat New Prague with scores of 25-11, 25-21, 20-25, and 25-16. Lakeville South also won convincingly against Farmington, 25-19, 25-18, and 25-13.
In Section 3, East Ridge captured the championship title after a tight match with Eagan, winning 25-22, 19-25, 27-25, 24-26, and 15-5. Champlin Park took down Maple Grove in Section 5’s championship match with scores of 17-25, 20-25, 25-20, 25-20, and 15-13. Apple Valley emerged victorious against Minneapolis Southwest in Section 6, winning 20-25, 15-25, 25-23, 25-20, and 15-9.
In Class 3A, Byron beat Kasson-Mantorville with scores of 26-24, 25-9, 20-25, and 25-18. Stewartville also advanced by defeating Red Wing with scores of 25-23, 25-11, and 25-15. Marshall and Mahtomedi both won their respective championships in Sections 2 and 4, while Monticello and Delano grabbed their titles in Section 5 and Section 6 respectively.
This week’s matches have set the stage for the finals, as teams prepare to vie for the state titles. Fans and students are eagerly awaiting what promises to be a thrilling conclusion to the season.
