High School Football Season Kicks Off in Vermont

As the fall season of 2024 kicks off in Vermont, high school sports are heating up. With action in soccer, field hockey, volleyball, golf, and cross-country running, teams are eager to show what they can do.

In soccer, Essex fought hard against South Burlington, securing a narrow 1-0 victory. Sophia Liu scored the game’s only goal, assisted by Hazel Fry, while Kelsie Scanlon made five crucial saves to maintain the shutout.

Mount Mansfield had a thrilling game against Burlington that ended in a 5-4 win after double overtime. Chloe DeJong and Evie Keblin each netted two goals, with DeJong scoring the game-winner. Ella Knudsen stood out for Burlington by scoring four goals, showcasing a high-scoring performance despite the loss.

Champlain Valley emerged victorious over Colchester with a decisive 3-0 win, led by Reese Kingsbury and Elsa Klein, each contributing a goal and an assist. Meanwhile, Milton dominated Mount Abraham in a 4-0 match, with Dasie May Gabree leading the charge with two goals and one assist.

In field hockey, Stowe’s team secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory against Lake Region. The game was dignified by a community effort, as Lake Region’s red card cancer game raised $1,719 for the Hope Lodge in Burlington. On the other side, Middlebury beat Rice 2-0, with Jazmyn Hurley leading with one goal and one assist.

On the volleyball court, Essex defeated Champlain Valley 3-1, with impressive performances by Riley Austin and Hannah Knickerbocker. Meanwhile, South Burlington matched up against Hartford, with South Burlington pulling out a 3-1 win.

As the fall season rolls on, fans can keep up with the upcoming games scheduled for later this week. Coaches and team representatives are reminded to report game scores to share the exciting action across the season.
