LEXINGTON COUNTY, S.C. — A peaceful Sunday evening turned tragic when a fatal collision occurred on Interstate 26, leading to the untimely death of a local man. The incident has captured the attention of the community as details continue to emerge.
The collision happened around 7:49 p.m. on October 3, when a 2002 Toyota Tacoma was traveling westbound along I-26. Meanwhile, a pedestrian was walking east in the westbound lanes, near mile marker 111, which is situated close to Augusta Road and about a mile north of Springdale.
Witnesses reported that the Tacoma unexpectedly collided with the pedestrian, who has since been identified as Clayton Wesley Barrs, a 68-year-old resident of West Columbia. Despite the immediate response of emergency services, Barrs succumbed to his injuries right at the scene, as confirmed by Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher.
The driver of the Tacoma did the right thing by stopping and staying at the scene of the accident. Fortunately, both the driver and passenger were not injured, but the psychological impact of witnessing such a horrific event is likely to haunt them for some time.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) is currently leading the investigation into this unfortunate event. According to officials, they are gathering more evidence to understand how the collision occurred and whether any other factors contributed to it. Both the coroner’s office and the SCHP will continue to look into all details surrounding the incident.
As the investigation unfolds, many in the local community are left to ponder the circumstances that can lead to such tragedies. Safety on the roads is a shared responsibility, and incidents like these serve as a reminder of the unpredictability of life.
News of Barrs’ death has stirred many emotions in Lexington County. Friends, family, and neighbors are expressing their grief over the loss of a familiar face in the community. Barrs will be remembered not just for this tragic incident, but for his life and contributions to the area.
Local residents have taken to social media to share their condolences and memories of the beloved community member. Many are emphasizing the importance of pedestrian awareness and caution, particularly during times when visibility may be low, such as during dusk or nighttime.
This heartbreaking event underscores the need for increased awareness on roads—both for drivers and pedestrians. Authorities encourage all road users to remain vigilant, obey traffic signals, and make sure to be seen, especially during the twilight hours when visibility decreases.
As the community processes this sorrowful event, let us take the opportunity to come together and advocate for safer roads for everyone. Dealing with the aftermath of such accidents can be challenging, but a united and proactive community can work to prevent further tragedies.
Please keep Clayton Wesley Barrs’ family in your thoughts during this incredibly difficult time. As more information becomes available regarding the investigation, we will continue to follow this situation and provide updates to our community.
