This week in Vermont, the fall high school sports season kicked off with exciting matches across various disciplines including soccer, field hockey, volleyball, and cross-country running. Here are some of the highlights from the recent games.
In soccer action, Mount Mansfield and Champlain Valley played to a 1-1 draw. Delilah Locher scored for MMU while Reese Kingsbury netted one for CVU. Goalkeepers Toni Cardinal and Hannah Zabalinski stepped up for MMU, combining for 11 saves, while CVU’s Anya Johnson made a notable save of her own.
Burlington had a commanding win over BFA-St. Albans, finishing 6-0. Ella Knudsen shined with 2 goals and 3 assists, contributing significantly to the victory.
In another matchup, Mount Abraham topped Rice with a 2-0 victory, with goals from Safoura Camara and Louisa Painter. The team’s goalkeeper, Rosemary Behounek, protected the net with 9 saves.
Essex pulled off a thrilling 2-1 win against Colchester, thanks to a stunning 40-yard goal from Hazel Fry with only 12 minutes remaining. This match was a rematch of last year’s championship game.
In field hockey, Fair Haven secured a solid 4-2 victory over Otter Valley with standout performance from Maddy Perry, who scored twice and provided an assist. Montpelier also recorded a dominant 4-0 win against Lyndon.
