Columbia is buzzing with energy this fall, as several notable changes and achievements are taking center stage in our community. From leadership at local organizations to recognition of remarkable individuals, there’s plenty to celebrate!
In a positive move for Columbia’s initiative to aid the homeless population, Homeless No More recently welcomed a new executive committee during its September board meeting. This updated team consists of familiar faces committed to making a difference. Stepping in as board chair is Marti Bluestein, who is joined by vice chair Frank W. Cason, returning secretary Kimberly Snipes, and treasurer David M. Kirkpatrick Jr.. Their collective experience and dedication are sure to bring fresh ideas and renewed energy to the organization, making strides towards a brighter future for our city’s homeless residents.
Continuing with exciting updates, Epworth Children’s Home has appointed new leaders as part of their strategic vision moving forward. Kendra Faile has taken on the role of chief operating officer, while Lauren Tinman has been named chief strategy officer. Their leadership promises to enhance the support and services provided to children and families in need, further strengthening the vital work this organization does in the community.
Let’s take a moment to celebrate Historic Columbia, which has been recognized with the prestigious Trustees’ Award for Organizational Excellence by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. This honor reflects the hard work and commitment of the Historic Columbia team in preserving our city’s rich heritage. Their efforts play a crucial role in maintaining the character and history that makes Columbia such a unique place to live.
Food lovers in Columbia have something to look forward to! The Greater Columbia Chapter of the South Carolina Restaurant and Lodging Association is gearing up for its annual Columbia Restaurant Hall of Fame and Benefit Dinner, which will take place on Monday, November 25, at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. This year’s event will honor the Lifetime Achievement Award recipients, Carmella and Joe Roche, owners of Villa Tronco, for their dedication to the culinary scene in our city.
Not only that, but this year’s Restaurant Hall of Fame inductees include notable figures like Steve Cook of Saluda’s Restaurant, Larry Chandler from Firehouse Subs, and Mark Price of Mill Pond Steakhouse. Their contributions to the local dining landscape truly deserve recognition, and the event promises to be a great way to support and celebrate our local restaurants.
In the realm of justice, The Honorable Judge DeAndrea Gist Benjamin along with esteemed colleagues Deputy Solicitor Ashley Hammack and Assistant Deputy Attorney General Kinli Abee, have been honored with the Ernest F. Hollings Award for their outstanding contributions in the criminal justice system. These professionals are making a significant impact through their dedication and expertise, and their recognition is well earned.
Moreover, Judge Benjamin also received the Alumni Professional Achievement Award from Winthrop University. This accolade reflects her commitment not only to her profession but also to her community, proving that her accomplishments resonate beyond the courtroom.
Lastly, the Marwin Company has been awarded the South Carolina Business Partner Award by the South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Association (SCVRA). This recognition showcases the vital role local businesses play in supporting those with disabilities, demonstrating a strong commitment to serving every member of our community.
In these changing times, it’s refreshing to see so many positive developments in Columbia. With new leadership and wonderful recognitions, our city continues to grow and thrive!
