Columbia, a city renowned for its vibrant arts, culture, and community celebrations has unveiled an array of events set to captivate residents and visitors alike in the coming months. From exhibitions and festivals to workshops and scholarships, there’s something for everyone in this bustling city.
The upcoming art events include adult and kids classes at Alexandra’s Art Studio located at 111 Sparkleberry Crossing Road, with details available on artstudiocola.com. Shandon United Methodist Church will be showcasing the recent work of artist Kennedy Lambe in an exhibition that will run through February 29. Furthermore, the city’s visitors center, in collaboration with One Columbia for Arts and Culture, will host artist pop-ups on weekends through to July 28.
In recognition of the vibrant African American culture, the City of Columbia will host the 2024 Black History Heritage Ball on February 25, at 3 p.m., in Hyatt Park. As an illustrious cultural gala, this event will serve to celebrate and acknowledge the contributions of African Americans in shaping the nation’s history and culture. Tickets must be purchased in advance.
Dance enthusiasts can look forward to the Palmetto Scottish Country Dance, held every Monday, or the Adult Ballet Classes every Thursday. The Ly-Ben Dance Alliance will also host the thrilling Ubuntu Dance Festival on April 20, featuring masterclasses, community dance classes, and an evening dance concert.
A warming precursor of spring, the iconic St. Pat’s in Five Points festival is slated for Saturday, March 16. Besides featuring local, regional, and national acts performing across multiple stages, the expansive lineup of the festival makes it one of the richest in the festival’s history.
The vibrant city of Columbia also values the educational landscape. In line with this, the South Carolina State Fair has started applications for its 27th annual Ride of Your Life Scholarship program. The initiative allocates over $500,000 in college scholarships to high school seniors across South Carolina. The registration is open until March 15, 2024.
In an aim to support those challenged with life situations, several support groups are active in Columbia. Among these is the ADD/ADHD Support Group, providing hope and encouragement for families, parents, and special individuals dealing with the complexities of ADD/ADHD. The SC Youth Advocate Program also offers 24-hour support for foster families.
The Nickelodeon is set to celebrate Black History Month with a series of film screenings showcasing black excellence and artistry. Screenings include Marshall, Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child, and Summer of Soul – each offering a unique glimpse into the African American experience.
An opportunity for story enthusiasts, the 2024 StoryCorps Mobile Tour will embrace Columbia from March 21 through April 19. In-person and remote recording options are available to all participants, free of charge.
