DOWAGIAC – As the high school basketball season kicks off, this year will feel a little different for schools in Cass and Berrien counties. One empty seat at the press table will remind everyone of the late Scott Novak, a beloved sports editor who passed away recently after a battle with illness. Novak had dedicated 42 years to covering local sports and created a strong bond with the community.
During his career, he made it a point to represent every athlete in the sports section at least once, showing a deep love for high school sports across the area. He reported on various teams, from Dowagiac to Edwardsburg, and made a significant impact in not only high school athletics but also in youth leagues and even professional motocross events.
With a knack for storytelling and a commitment to thorough coverage, Novak’s work resonated with many athletes, coaches, and fans throughout Southwestern Michigan. He always incorporated detailed statistics and highlights in his articles, which became a staple for the Leader Publications.
This basketball season, Dowagiac High School will set aside Novak’s usual spot at the game to honor his memory and contributions. Those who knew him, like Brent Nate, the school’s athletic director, expressed how special it was to have Novak covering their games. From little league to high school championship stories, Novak was present for many memorable events.
His positive nature and passion for sports left a lasting impact on everyone around him. Coaches, athletes, and fellow journalists alike are grateful for the way he uplifted their spirits and covered local sports with enthusiasm.
A memorial table was set up at a recent playoff game in honor of Novak, featuring candles and a photo of him. It’s clear that while he may be gone, his influence on the community and its athletes will carry on.
The basketball games scheduled for this winter will undoubtedly bring forth a mix of joy and nostalgia, as everyone remembers the unforgettable presence of Scott Novak, a true champion for local sports.
