A heated contest run by the South Carolina Manufacturers Alliance had 16 finalists announced recently in the third annual Manufacturing Madness competition. The winner of the contest will be granted the prestigious title: “Coolest Thing Made in S.C.” The public voting phase saw a turnout of over 56,000 votes.
The 2024 Top 16 finalists comprise an eclectic mix of products. The list includes Next-gen USPS Delivery Vehicle by Oshkosh Defense, Spartanburg; Honda Talon 1000R-4 Fox Live Valve by American Honda Motor Co., Inc., Florence; TGIF Baby Back Ribs by Spartanburg Meat Processing Company, Inc., Spartanburg; and the 9-Speed Automatic Transmission by ZF Transmissions, Laurens.
Other products making the cut are BMW XM Plug-In Hybrid by BMW Manufacturing Co., LLC, Spartanburg; High Noon Sun Sips by E. & J. Gallo Winery, Chester; Counterbalance Trucks by KION North America, Dorchester; and M240 Series Machine Guns by FN Manufacturing, LLC, Richland.
Finalists also feature Dixie Paper Plates from Georgia-Pacific, Darlington; Fire Sprinklers by Reliable Automatic Sprinkler Co., Inc., Pickens; Kazoobie Kazoos by Kazoobie Kazoos, LLC, Beaufort; and 670LXS by Scout Boats, Dorchester.
Rounding out the list are Michelin’s Earthmover Mining Tire, Lexington; Reishi by MycoWorks, Union; Sleep Number Climate360 Smart Bed by Sleep Number, Richland; and the Signa Hero MRI Scanner by GE HealthCare, Florence.
The Manufacturing Madness competition initiated in 2022 by the South Carolina Manufacturers Alliance, aims at showcasing the ingenuity of South Carolina manufacturers. Previous winners include the F-16 Fighting Falcon made by Lockheed Martin in Greenville that won the crown in 2023 and Steel by Nucor Steel Berkeley in Huger, the inaugural winner in 2022.
The competition enters its next phase with the final rounds of voting, set to pare the list down progressively each week until it yields the top four. The following rounds will take place on March 11-14 and March 18-21.
The winner will be announced in a ceremony held at the Statehouse on March 28.
