Columbia, get ready! You’re in for a treat this coming Wednesday, November 6, 2024, as renowned gospel singer Melvin Crispell III graces the stage at the Right Direction Church International Sanctuary. Known for his rich vocals and heartfelt performances, Crispell is all set to bring his unique musical ministry to the community, and fans couldn’t be more excited.
Crispell, the son of celebrated gospel composer Melvin Crispell Jr. and singer Tunesha Crispell, has made a significant mark in the gospel music scene. With albums like “I’ve Got A Testimony” released in 2020 and “No Failure” in 2023, his music has captured the hearts of many and has led him to earn some serious accolades. He’s not just your average gospel singer; his work has snagged him two Grammy nominations and a Dove Award win earlier this year. His hit song, “Wonderful Is Your Name”, has been streamed over 2 million times, confirming his growing popularity.
While many artists might aim for the bright lights of big concert venues, Crispell has made a special choice for this upcoming performance. He will be performing in a church setting, a nod to his humble beginnings and a testament to what truly matters to him.
“My foundation is singing at different churches,” Crispell shared. “These events mean a lot to me. And everybody needs Jesus, so it’s not just about the big stages and the big theaters. I like taking the time to go to local churches and share my story.”
Each performance is a unique experience for Crispell. He plans out his setlist, but he’s never afraid to let the Holy Spirit lead the way. “I try to plan, but the leading of the Holy Spirit is subject to change when I get in the moment,” he explained. “I just want to present gospel that is authentic in every room I enter.”
On top of live performances, Crispell has been hard at work on his new EP titled “Covered Vol. 1”, which brings fresh interpretations to classic gospel tunes. Featuring iconic songs like “He’s Never Failed Me Yet” and “The Battle Is The Lord’s”, this six-track collection showcases his remarkable vocal style, which is both flexible and deep in spirit.
“Choosing just six songs was almost impossible,” Crispell chuckled. “That’s why I decided on ‘Vol. 1,’ so we can explore even more in ‘Vol. 2!’”
Crispell’s mission goes beyond music; it’s about connection. He feels he performs for an audience of one, and that’s Jesus. “It’s all about inviting the congregation into my personal space of worship,” he noted. That connection, he added, allows everyone present to share in a unique experience of faith.
This year has been a whirlwind for Crispell, who received a Dove Award for Traditional Gospel Album of the Year for “No Failure”. His reaction? Pure gratitude! “I was not expecting to win, but I’m grateful to be rewarded for the hard work and dedication on this project,” he recalled.
Despite all the recognition, Crispell remains grounded, determined to raise spirits through his music. “My dedication and love for music and God has not changed,” he promised. “We have to inspire, lead, and invite people who may not know Jesus into that space.”
Get your tickets, tell your friends, and prepare your hearts, Columbia! Melvin Crispell III will take the stage at 7 p.m. on November 6 as part of the church’s four-day Direction Conference. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or just curious about gospel music, this is a night you won’t want to miss!
