Columbia Invests $19 Million in Water Upgrades for North Trenholm Road

Big Water Upgrades Coming to Columbia: A Fresh Start for North Trenholm Road

Columbia, S.C. is set to shine a little brighter for its water customers along North Trenholm Road thanks to a hefty investment of nearly $19 million by the city. That’s right – significant improvements in water pressure, quality, and reliability are on the way! This is great news for everyone who relies on Columbia Water, as officials work to replace outdated water mains that have been causing frustrations due to their tendency to break.

What You Can Expect

So, what does all this mean for local residents? Well, to put it simply, say goodbye to low water pressure and hello to a much improved experience when you turn on the tap! According to Clint Shealy, Columbia’s Assistant City Manager, this initiative will lead to “increased flow, pressure, and better water quality.” That’s music to the ears of anyone who’s ever dealt with lackluster water service.

A Modernized Water System

The project will not only bring in larger and more durable mains and pipes to North Trenholm Road, but it’ll also benefit key areas across the city. Shealy mentioned that the upgrades will give the city a “larger conduit to bring water” from the Lake Murray Water Treatment Plant. This will help improve service not just in the northeastern parts of Columbia but also deliver much-needed water to downtown zones and the southeastern region as well. Let’s not forget Fort Jackson—it’s crucial for the military base to have reliable water service, and these improvements will bolster that too.

The Construction Plan

This ambitious project is divided into two distinct phases. The first, or north phase, will stretch from Decker Boulevard to Rockbridge Road, while the south phase will connect Rockbridge Road to Forest Drive. Excitingly, both phases are set to run at the same time! This way, the city can tackle the upgrades faster, which is something we can all appreciate.

But wait, there’s more! This timeline is perfectly aligned with plans from the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT), who are prepping to repave North Trenholm Road. The city is making sure that these vital water infrastructure upgrades are done before any fresh pavement is laid down. Shealy explained, “The last thing we want to do is have old infrastructure and fresh pavement on top of it, and then if there’s a water line break, we’re in there tearing up the new road.” Nobody wants to see a shiny new road ruined by digging up old pipes!

Timeline for Completion

Anyone itching to see these changes will be pleased to know that construction is expected to kick off shortly after the New Year. The anticipated completion date for this project is early 2026, setting the stage for a fantastic upgrade to Columbia’s water services.

A Bright Future for Columbia Water

So, there you have it, Columbia! There’s a lot to look forward to with these new developments. Enhanced water pressure, increased quality, and greater reliability are all on the horizon. With these improvements, you can finally enjoy the water service you deserve, without the headaches of outdated infrastructure.

Keep an eye out for updates as this project unfolds, because it’s a bright future indeed for the residents of North Trenholm Road and all of Columbia!
