Columbia Unites for Annual ‘Souper’ Event to Support Local Women’s Shelter

Columbia Comes Together for a Heartwarming Tradition

As Thanksgiving approaches, the city of Columbia is all set for a much-anticipated and beloved community event, often referred to as “Souper”. This yearly collaboration between the Columbia Women’s Shelter, Chick-Fil-A, and Eastminster Presbyterian Church marks a time when citizens can come together to lend a helping hand to those in need.

A Tradition that Warms the Heart

For the past 44 years, the Columbia Women’s Shelter has hosted this heartwarming event in the week leading up to Thanksgiving. The purpose? To remind everyone of the blessings they have and to support their neighbors who may be struggling. Lee Coggiola, a dedicated board member of the shelter, shared insight into this meaningful initiative. “It’s a reminder that other people in our community might be facing hardships, often due to circumstances beyond their control,” she explained with genuine concern. “Sometimes a single medical issue can lead families to lose their homes. They haven’t done anything wrong; it’s simply life happening.”

With the support of partners like Chick-Fil-A and Eastminster Presbyterian Church, this event doesn’t just serve delicious food. It raises awareness and funds for a vital cause. “This is a team effort from folks across the community,” said Brad Smith, Senior Pastor of Eastminster Presbyterian Church. “The Women’s Shelter is doing fantastic work, and as a church, we’re here to love and serve. This is another opportunity for us to get involved.”

Supporting Our Neighbors in Need

The importance of the Columbia Women’s Shelter cannot be overstated. Since the 1970s, this vital organization has provided refuge for women who find themselves in difficult situations. They can accommodate about nine women at a time, along with 17 transitional homes, which serve as stepping stones towards stability. Beyond just offering a roof over their heads, the shelter also connects these women with additional resources to help them get back on their feet. It’s a comprehensive approach toward healing and empowerment.

Of course, the “Souper” event is not solely about fundraising. It’s also an opportunity for the community to reflect on their own privileges and to acknowledge those who may be experiencing hard times. Coggiola emphasizes this point, stating, “We must remember the people who are struggling, many through no fault of their own. They need a comforting place, with care and supportive individuals encouraging them as they navigate life’s challenges.”

How You Can Help

Are you feeling inspired? If you would like to learn more about how you can contribute to the Columbia Women’s Shelter, or if you’re looking for information on how to donate, there are numerous ways to get involved. Whether it’s through monetary donations or volunteering your time during events like “Souper,” every little bit helps make a difference.

In these times of uncertainty, the community spirit embodied by this event is a beautiful reminder of what the Thanksgiving season is all about. If you find yourself in Columbia this week, consider joining in the festivities. Not only will you enjoy some tasty food, but you’ll also be participating in a meaningful effort to empower and uplift women in need.

True to its mission, the Columbia Women’s Shelter continues to illustrate the idea that, together, we can create a stronger, more supportive community for everyone. Let’s extend a helping hand and open our hearts this holiday season!
