Columbia, S.C. Shelters Extend Assistance to Unhoused Amid Harsh Heat

Columbia have been experiencing extreme temperatures recently, with heat indices marking 101, 102, and 103 degrees. While those working indoors can escape the scorching temperatures, those without a home or working outside face the full brunt of these conditions. This has prompted shelters across the region to step forward to provide unhoused citizens relief from the unrelenting heat.

Shelter Efforts to Combat Heat

Transitions Homeless Center, one of the notable shelters in the Midlands, is availing its facilities to the unhoused to help them cool down. “Regardless of the temperature, we ensure a steady supply of ice from our ice machine, coolers full of ice, and accessible water fountains. Our air-conditioned day center and dorm provide a cool and comfortable place where individuals can escape the heat,” shared Craig Currey, Transitions Homeless Shelter CEO.

Scope of the Issue

There are an estimated 334 unsheltered individuals currently in Richland County, according to City of Columbia officials. Such high temperatures pose a direct risk to these individuals, making the efforts of shelters like Transitions critical.

Expert Advice on Heat Safety

Amid these pressing conditions, Chief Meteorologist Adam Clark recommended consistent hydration and rest as key to staying safe during such extreme heat. “Hydrate even if you’re not thirsty. Hydration is crucial, not least for the unhoused. They must have plenty of water and avoid long-distanced travel. It is crucial they stay cool and limit exposure to direct sunlight,” remarked Clark.

While forecasts indicate slight relief over the next couple of days, the weekend is expected to bring back high temperatures to the Midlands, underscoring the urgency of the issue.
