Columbia, the capital city of South Carolina, is buzzing with transformation and excitement. Over the past decade, this charming city has blossomed into a hub of art, culture, and culinary delights. Recently, a local photographer, known for his stunning captures of the city, took a leisurely tour with us to share his favorite spots that highlight Columbia’s growth and unique offerings.
Our adventure kicked off at A Peace of Soul Vegan Kitchen, a delightful vegan takeout spot nestled near downtown. This award-winning eatery is well-loved for its mouthwatering dishes. We savored their creamy mac & cheese that felt like a warm hug in a bowl, zesty purple cabbage that added a crunch, and a delicious take on vegan ribs that left us wanting more. It’s evident that this place has a dedicated following for good reason!
As we strolled through the city, it became clear just how much Columbia has embraced the arts over the years. Crush pointed out that the city has seen a significant move towards enhancing its arts and culture scene. This was evident as we made our way to the Mast General Store, a few blocks from the Capitol on Main Street. This charming establishment features creaky wooden floors and a plethora of products, from nostalgic candy to the beloved locally-made Blenheim ginger ale.
Next on our list was the Columbia Museum of Art (CMA), which is gearing up to celebrate its 75th anniversary in 2025. The museum will temporarily close galleries for some much-needed lighting upgrades but plans to reopen on May 24 with an exciting exhibition featuring renowned artist Sam Gilliam. The CMA offers captivating pieces spanning various eras and styles, along with a dedicated gallery titled Our Story Matters, focusing on the Black experience from the Reconstruction era to the 1970s.
Our next stop was The Nick, a beloved nonprofit cinema established in 1979. This cozy venue showcases everything from independent films to blockbuster hits and regularly hosts special events and filmmaker talkbacks, making it a delightful destination for film buffs.
If casual dining with a twist is what you’re after, then The Grand is the place to be! This venue has been voted as the “best place for a first date” and features a full menu that includes the crowd-favorite shrimp and grits. To add to the fun, there’s also a bowling alley, perfect for friendly competition and laughter.
Just a stone’s throw away, Five Points awaits, offering a vibrant urban village packed with food, shopping, and lively nightlife, all adorned with stunning murals. This area is especially popular with university students, making it a hotspot for local shops and eateries that cater to every craving.
No trip to Columbia is complete without a walk along the West Columbia Riverwalk Park and Amphitheater. This half-mile path hugs the banks of the Congaree River and offers picnic tables and occasional kayak rentals. It’s the perfect spot to unwind in nature and appreciate the fresh air.
As February is Black History Month, Columbia is brimming with events celebrating its rich history. One highlight is the free, weekly walking tours organized by Columbia SC 63. The “Journey To Freedom” tour explores significant civil rights landmarks and stories of iconic figures like Modjeska Simkins and Sarah Mae Fleming, offering deep insights into the city’s past.
The city is also showcasing the renowned folk artist Ernest Lee, affectionately known as “The Chicken Man,” at the Columbia Visitors Center this month. Plus, festival enthusiasts won’t want to miss the annual Jubilee Festival of Black History & Culture at the Mann-Simons site, celebrating African American contributions through a vibrant blend of music, art vendors, and fun activities for children.
With its charming spots and rich culture, Columbia is certainly a city on the rise. This weekend trip with Crush Rush offered just a glimpse of the wonderful adventures waiting for anyone looking to explore this flourishing South Carolina gem!
