Columbia Remembers: A Special Day at Mission BBQ

On a cloudy September 11 in Columbia, a heartfelt event unfolded at the local Mission BBQ, where community spirit and remembrance took center stage. With the weather staying warm—highs approaching a delightful 80°F—and a gentle breeze drifting in from the east, the atmosphere was perfect for honoring heroes from the past and present.

Mission BBQ, known for its mouth-watering barbecue and dedication to American values, has made it a tradition to commemorate this solemn day each year. This year marked a significant moment as it was the 13th anniversary of the restaurant’s grand opening, which took place exactly a decade after those tragic attacks on September 11, 2001.

Honoring Our Heroes

The air buzzed with anticipation as Kaaren Miller from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department took the stage to sing the National Anthem. Moments like these remind everyone why they were gathered—honoring those who bravely serve and those who lost their lives on that fateful day. It was a moving moment as the solemn notes of Taps echoed through the air, played beautifully by Linda McDonald, bringing a quiet respect to the crowd.

First responders from various local departments, including the Irmo Fire Department, Columbia Police, and Lexington County EMS, were in attendance to partake in the annual event. It was great to see the community come together not just to remember but to show appreciation for the hard work of these dedicated individuals. To express gratitude, Mission BBQ generously offered a free sandwich to every first responder who visited on this special day.

Community Support and Initiatives

The event wasn’t just about reflection; it also highlighted Mission BBQ’s commitment to giving back. The Columbia location actively supports several local organizations, such as the SC State Firefighters Association and the Muller Memorial Collection. Attendees had the opportunity to browse through a table filled with caps being sold to raise funds for the Muller Memorial Foundation, a cause close to the hearts of many.

One special guest at the gathering was JB Barker, a retired officer from the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, who was honored for his years of service. Standing alongside Gina Goetschius, the Mission BBQ Community Ambassador, JB exemplified the spirit of service and dedication that the restaurant aims to celebrate.

In a heartfelt statement, Thayer Sheets, the Area Director for Mission BBQ, expressed gratitude to all the heroes present, saying, “It is because of these heroes that we gather today, all of you, so that we may never forget and always remember.”

A Day to Remember

As the event came to a close, attendees left with full stomachs and full hearts, feeling a deep sense of camaraderie and unity. It’s events like these that remind us all of the power of community and the importance of remembering our history. The Mission BBQ Columbia location, situated at 275 Harbison Boulevard, continues to be a place where good food and good deeds come together to celebrate the spirit of America.

So, if you’re ever in the area and looking for a hearty meal served with a side of gratitude, you might find that Mission BBQ does more than just serve food—they serve a purpose, too.
