Columbia Calls for Volunteers to Count Pedestrians and Cyclists

Hey there, Columbia! If you’ve ever strolled through our bustling streets or zipped around on your bike, you know how important it is to have a safe and friendly environment for everyone who’s on foot or two wheels. Well, guess what? The city is gearing up for a crucial event this September, and they need your help!

What’s the Buzz?

The City of Columbia is looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join in on their upcoming Pedestrian and Bicyclist Counts. This effort is crucial because it’s part of a larger initiative called the National Bicycle and Pedestrian Documentation Project. What does all this mean? It’s simple! These counts will help ensure that everyone who walks, rides bikes, and uses public transport gets a fair representation in traffic studies. In turn, this information will influence our city’s transportation planning. Sounds impactful, right?

Why Should You Get Involved?

You might be wondering, “Why should I care? What’s in it for me?” Well, not only will you be contributing to a better, more walkable city, but you’ll also get firsthand experience of how urban planning works. Plus, it’s a fun way to give back to the community. You might even meet fellow residents who share your passion for making our streets safer!

What Will You Be Doing?

Volunteers will be stationed at key intersections where pedestrian and cyclist traffic is often high, especially in areas where safety is a concern. Think of those busy crossings where you’ve had your heart race a bit while trying to navigate traffic. Your job will be to collect data that city planners will use to craft designs for sidewalks, bike lanes, and other transportation upgrades. It’s all about making Columbia a safer, more walkable, and bike-friendly place for everyone!

When Can You Help?

The counts are scheduled at various times, allowing you to pick what works best for you. Whether you’re an early bird or prefer a more relaxed weekend vibe, there are slots available. Here’s the lineup:

  • Saturday, September 7: 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
