Columbia, S.C. Launches the Palmetto Broadband Coalition to Enhance Internet Access Across the State

Columbia, S.C. Welcomes New Era of Broadband Connectivity

In an exciting turn of events, the South Carolina Telecommunications and Broadband Association has officially transformed itself into the Palmetto Broadband Coalition (PBC). This revamped identity signals a refreshing commitment to expanding broadband access and adoption throughout the beautiful state of South Carolina!

This name change isn’t just about a fresh coat of paint; it represents the organization’s enduring mission to ensure that every South Carolinian has reliable and high-speed internet access. With technology evolving at a rapid pace, the PBC aims to keep pace and ensure no one is left in the digital dust.

A Rich History of Connectivity

For nearly a century, South Carolina’s connectivity providers have been working together to ensure citizens can stay connected. The roots of this initiative can be traced back to 1934 when the South Carolina Independent Telephone Association was founded. Over the years, the organization underwent several name changes, including a shift to the South Carolina Telephone Association, and later became the South Carolina Telecommunications Association. Most recently, in 2014, it was rebranded as the South Carolina Telecommunications and Broadband Association.

Now, as the Palmetto Broadband Coalition, the organization is positioning itself as a leader in bridging the digital divide. “South Carolina is changing and so are we,” expressed Will Helmly, CEO of Home Telecom and the Chairman of PBC. This simple phrase encapsulates the Coalition’s mission: to provide modern technologies and superior customer service for all communities.

What the Palmetto Broadband Coalition Stands For

The PBC is made up of an impressive network, serving over 430,000 broadband customers across the state. These local providers are not only pivotal in ensuring access to broadband but also contribute significantly to the local economy by employing more than 2,800 South Carolinians on a full-time basis. In just the past few years, companies associated with the PBC have poured close to $1 billion into broadband capital investments.

Unlike larger national and multinational corporations that often focus on maximizing profits, the PBC is comprised of companies deeply rooted in their communities. PBC leaders are committed to ensuring residents have access to cutting-edge technologies while providing top-notch customer service. They understand the local landscape and are driven by a genuine passion for upliftment and community development.

Leadership Dedicated to a Vision

The PBC will be guided by a passionate group of leaders, including Helmly, Jay Brown from Farmers Telephone Cooperative, and Ben Spearman of Comporium, alongside Executive Director Nola Armstrong. Together, they are set to oversee essential projects while nurturing collaboration with policymakers and local stakeholders.

Bridging the Digital Divide

The Coalition is on a mission to advocate for policies and investments that foster broadband expansion, cultivate relationships between public and private entities, and support initiatives aimed at bridging the digital divide, particularly in underserved communities. The Palmetto Broadband Coalition is committed to ensuring that everyone, regardless of where they live, can access the digital world.

Meet the PBC Members

The Coalition is composed of diverse members including Comporium of Rock Hill, Farmers Telephone Cooperative of Kingstree, Home Telecom of Moncks Corner, and several others all committed to furthering broadband access. The PBC also welcomes over 100 associate members who provide essential products and services!
